...forget the the dealer, forget the removal keys available from ebay. Use one of these:

You do have to remove the air con unit first so you can grasp the HU and pull it once you have pushed the internal prong out the way, but that's easy - just pull it towards you.

Amazing. All this security surrounding the keys - Audi not selling them to customers - and it's this simple.

or they also work as a way of permanently fixing your stereo in so nobody can remove it again.... Bit of a gamble using one of those.

Only if you are a complete divvy. The unit in my A3 comes out very easily - hardly any force needed to push the prong out of the way. My dad's A4 was a bit stiffer, but probably because it has never been removed before. As long as you don't go at it like a bull in a china shop, it's very simple, and I would be more wary of using the removal key I got from Ebay.
