I posted a couple of weeks ago about a friends car on here, along with a list of faults with the car as returned by VCDS. There was a cylinder misfire, overboost along with a couple other niggly bits. Along with this, the car was loosing coolant with no visible signs of leaks anywhere so it may (can still be) have been leaking EGR cooler or cracked head gasket.
Got a few replies 'it maybe this, it maybe that', all good and appreciated suggestions by the members here. As I'd just had my car serviced and some other things done at a local specialist who did a solid job all round, my mate also booked his car in at the same garage on my recommendation (Chris Umpleby Cars, Bradford). The intention being, get it diagnosed, pressure tested and checked to see where the coolants leaking and what's causing the misfire and overboost.
Mate dropped the car off this morning (~10) as it was booked in on his day off work, the plan was to get it diagnosed, then pick up any parts needed (turbo, egr etc) ourselves, and get the job done whatever the bill really. Chris said he'd ring as soon as he'd looked at it, insisted on scanning for faults himself however at a charge of £45 which is fair enough. Got a call around 2 in the afternoon, so said we'll pop in as were around the corner and see what's what. Result?
He had a sheet printed out with a list of faults, which we already have. Told us we thought he 'must be stupid' because Greenflag (car wasn't starting in the morning) cleared the faults on it in the morning and somehow this translated to us ripping him off? Told us that injectors may need changing, and it may need a new turbo plus other things. Had he actually had a look underneath the bonnet? Nope. Just took it for a spin around the block and gave us a list of maybe's, all of which we already knew. Asked him cost for labour? His response was basically 'I can't be asked pressure testing it, too much work' and gave us the keys back with absolutely no helpful advice given, complete fob off. A day completely wasted when the car could have gone into a garage that was actually willing to do the work (which would be paid for)! Worse still I don't understand how it took 4 hours to take the car for a drive around the block and print some sheets of paper?
Needless to say, I won't be going back myself in the future and sure as hell won't be referring people there either.
