Turbo/Supercarger kits for 3.2

yup, the main limiting factor in turbo'ing a car is the manifold. Getting a one off cast is hugely expensive, and puts most people off, as if it cracks then you need another one-off.

If you can get a manifold with the right fitting for your turbo of choice, you can pretty much do what you want.

You've got to do so much though, haven't you ?

Not just a case of banging on a turbo and manifold.

You've to lower your compression ratios and all sorts.

I'm always planning one move or another /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The thought of >400bhp in an A3 (with quattro obviously) tickles me slightly. Especially if you can get a 2 year old S-Line for a sensible price. Kits are normally somewhere in the region of £4-8k....sounds like a cheap super car to me.

Doing it from a purely technical point of view isn't all that difficult.

Doing it and maintaining long term reliability is a whole lot more difficult. Engines that have been designed to have some sort of forced induction are engineered with wider crankshaft journals and better oil lubrication/cooling arrangements to cope with the increased loads/higher temps.

The nature of doing this usually means butchering lots of expensive components - a one way trip and difficult to revert to stock. Bar-room fokelore will tell you differently though...

As has been suggested, bikes are often done - mileages are usually very low and the things get done 'because you can'....which is fine with me!

Would it not be easier to tune a 2.0T though ?

If you were to chip one of those and fit an upgraded turbo, you'd probably be looking at well over 300bhp,would you not ??

Be easier to upgrade an already turbocharged engine, than to fit one to a NA engine ??

yeah, but 300bhp isn't anything special. You need to break the 400bhp barrier in a car the weight of the A3.

I might drop the Audi altogether and go down the Skyline route. I almost bought one before my current A3.

I wish there were more supercharged cars going around.

My grandad used to play me a 78 record he had which featured the sound of a supercharged spitfire and a supercharged Bentley..

Oh,the sound....

No turbo lag either.

Had 340/50bhp in my last car (EVO6)...

...and was a lot of fun. 4WD is a must and add this to an A3 and it would be a right liaff circa 400bhp.

IMHO the Skylines are heavy and lack the agility of an EVO. Great in a straight line with monster hp tho. I would go for an EVO 4> and u WILL NOT be disappointed with its handling. U just need to get used to the AYC as can have a sting in its tail.

along with having the thing serviced every 4.5K miles and eating tyres like a teddy chewing toffy... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

absolutely, the amount of work needed is monumental, but most of the parts can be bought of the shelf though.

The manifold development can take a good few castings before you get turbo placement and airflow characteristics perfect - and even then you may need to compromise with your given engine layout and heat dissipation.

I'd imagine that the v6 engine would be a complete pain to do due to lack of space, so the supercharger route would be the cheapest option.

True, but they are not cars to pile on the miles with. Mind you if you do and can afford it they do wear very well.

IMHO turbo'ing an NA car from the factory is gonna cost. Then getting the power down properly with the running gear would be more money. Diffs and gearboxes do get eaten when the power goes way up beyond oem. They where the achilies for the EVO 6 but cheaper to kill a diff or box than an engine so it seemed to be a design.

Just get an RS4 B5 loads of fun oem and then loads you can do with it.

exactly, not to mention loads of £££ lost supercharging an NA OEM A3.
At least with an RS4, you won't lose as much money after you've had your fun!

hmmm, decisions decisions.

I've already got a stupidly fast 'drivers' car but wanted something more fun as the daily driver without stoooopid running costs (Evo being included in that category). B5 RS4 looks a bit too dated IMO. I might even go back to the B7 S4 train of thought....

Just thinking out loud really, I change my mind about the next chariot on an hourly basis.

There are lots of fast cars out there, from the Evos & Subies to Lambos, with Porsches somewhere in between. What's hard to find is a nondescript and hugely powerful car. Say, something like a 400+hp A3. Wait a minute, is that what this thread's about? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Turbos and superchargers for the 3.2 eh? Well, here's some info for ya then:

1. www.vf-engineering.com have been in the business of producing centrifugal supercharger kits for a long time now. They used to be Z-Engineering, for those that might remember. Now based in California, they have sold over 200 superchargers for VW R32s (same 15°VR6 24v 3.2 as in the A3). In the UK, AmD (among others) have seen a few of these.

Well, Nik (the owner) imported a 3.2 A3 to the 'states almost two years ago, and developed a Vortech-supercharger kit for it. Stock 11.3 : 1 compression (thus, no opening of the engine required for fitting), air to water aftercooler, 6 psi, and 350 - 360hp.

This type of supercharger doesn't produce massive amounts of torque, but does offer very linear power. In fact, power and torque curves look like stock, only higher, and last all the way past redline to 7,000 rpm.

The development A3 has come back to Europe, gone through NS Racing and AmD's hands, and is now for sale by Abt in Germany. It's a lhd model btw.

2. The most reputed 3.2 turbo builder is www.hgp-turbo.de , who have built prototypes for VW Motorsport. Remember the silver twin-turbo 4-Motion Golf VW prototype from the early 90s? That was them. You may have heard of HPA, from Canada, who are a spinoff of HGP. They have built the MkV Jetta and Passat R-GT show cars for VW.

For the A3, HGP/HPA can go from mild to wild: 400 to 550+hp. Single or double custom-trim Garret units are used. They are hugely expensive: count 17,000€ for a single-turbo 400hp kit (installed), to close to 30,000€ for the twin-turbo kit. The 400hp kit is proven dead-reliable, and can be fitted to a DSG transmission.

3. www.eip-tuning.com are back on track with decidedly solid products. Their specialty is low-cost turbo kits based on Turbonetics units. Their entry-level kit retains stock compression. www.vr6specialists.nl in the Netherlands will be glad to fit a kit to your A3 for about 8000€. Circa 400hp. There's at least one GB R32 with an Eip kit: SimonV6Golf on TS.net.

4. www.streetwerke.com is the newcomer. Their R32 kit is yet to be released, and 480hp for 10,000 USD is only a few months away. They have a solid reputation and this kit is already hailed for its quality.

The A3 version will be out by Christmas.

All four companies will be present at the Streets of Willow race track in southern California. An entire day dedicated to comparing these four kits, on a track and on streets. A show made possible by the SoCalR32 community and a great way to shop for TC/SC on 3.2s. It's happening April 10th, and I'll be there to make up my mind as to which option to go for.

Ben.

wouldn't weight be less in a 2.0T and handle better with less weight up front? 3.2 twin turbo would be good though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif

Id love a super charger on my 3.2 pity its not a easy bolt on and just have a ON / Off switch option

The A3 3.2 Quattro can handle so much more power, its such a waste /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I'm going to sound like a know-it all, but Novitech, who make supercharger kits in Switzerland, have a switcheable kit for the MkIV R32. They won't adapt it to the A3 though... (I've asked).

Call Raj at NS racing if you're truly serious about a VF-Engineering kit for your A3.

If a Turbo is more to your liking, try contacting SimonV6Golf on TS.net.
