There are lots of fast cars out there, from the Evos & Subies to Lambos, with Porsches somewhere in between. What's hard to find is a nondescript
and hugely powerful car. Say, something like a 400+hp A3. Wait a minute, is that what this thread's about? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Turbos and superchargers for the 3.2 eh? Well, here's some info for ya then:
1.
www.vf-engineering.com have been in the business of producing centrifugal supercharger kits for a long time now. They used to be Z-Engineering, for those that might remember. Now based in California, they have sold over 200 superchargers for VW R32s (same 15°VR6 24v 3.2 as in the A3). In the UK, AmD (among others) have seen a few of these.
Well, Nik (the owner) imported a 3.2 A3 to the 'states almost two years ago, and developed a Vortech-supercharger kit for it. Stock 11.3 : 1 compression (thus, no opening of the engine required for fitting), air to water aftercooler, 6 psi, and 350 - 360hp.
This type of supercharger doesn't produce massive amounts of torque, but does offer very linear power. In fact, power and torque curves look like stock, only higher, and last all the way past redline to 7,000 rpm.
The development A3 has come back to Europe, gone through NS Racing and AmD's hands, and is now for sale by Abt in Germany. It's a lhd model btw.
2. The most reputed 3.2 turbo builder is
www.hgp-turbo.de , who have built prototypes for VW Motorsport. Remember the silver twin-turbo 4-Motion Golf VW prototype from the early 90s? That was them. You may have heard of HPA, from Canada, who are a spinoff of HGP. They have built the MkV Jetta and Passat R-GT show cars for VW.
For the A3, HGP/HPA can go from mild to wild: 400 to 550+hp. Single or double custom-trim Garret units are used. They are hugely expensive: count 17,000 for a single-turbo 400hp kit (installed), to close to 30,000 for the twin-turbo kit. The 400hp kit is proven dead-reliable, and can be fitted to a DSG transmission.
3.
www.eip-tuning.com are back on track with decidedly solid products. Their specialty is low-cost turbo kits based on Turbonetics units. Their entry-level kit retains stock compression.
www.vr6specialists.nl in the Netherlands will be glad to fit a kit to your A3 for about 8000. Circa 400hp. There's at least one GB R32 with an Eip kit: SimonV6Golf on TS.net.
4.
www.streetwerke.com is the newcomer. Their R32 kit is yet to be released, and 480hp for 10,000 USD is only a few months away. They have a solid reputation and this kit is already hailed for its quality.
The A3 version will be out by Christmas.
All four companies will be present at the Streets of Willow race track in southern California. An entire day dedicated to comparing these four kits, on a track and on streets. A show made possible by the SoCalR32 community and a great way to shop for TC/SC on 3.2s. It's happening April 10th, and I'll be there to make up my mind as to which option to go for.
Ben.
