So after buying the Mrs a 2010 Golf GT 3 months ago for her 40th, she now tells me she hates it and wants her old Audi back. Erm - we chopped it in love !!!

So been to look at a few Black Editions and very surprised at how many dealers want to sell ex fleet dogs in my opinion which are all quite tatty and just been tarted up to make a quick buck.

However all is not lost and I have a found a 2009 BE 2.0 TDI with 38K on the clock and FASH which looks very clean and only has a few niggles with it like a broken air vent, broken battery cowling, arm rest lid clasp, tatty door seal and air bag light surround which is loose.

I gave it the obligatory scan with VCDS and it has quite a few errors which I was surprised at and the list was quite long. i.e. passenger door module, brake lights, radio, bulbs. However after clearing them all it looks like it has an issue with the MAF (No Biggie and an easy fix), the stereo doesn't seem to be coded right and error 00470 which from my research could be anything from door locks, battery drain broken wiring etc.

I really don't want to buy a lemon and have long term issues with it as this is not a cheap car. I wished I had saved the scan prior to clearing the codes.

Everything seems to work on the car, radio, locks, lights (number plate light blown) Air con etc and drives fine.

Any advice appreciated people. This is the 5th BE I have looked at and the cleanest straightest example yet, but these codes are worrying me. I don't know if the 00470 is related to the radio possibly not being coded correctly.

Is that garage in Stockport off the A6 ?

Nice colour by the way

I was looking at the black 3.2 TT a couple of days ago, thought i recognized the place !! what are the owners like ? ok ? or billy big shots ?

Owners seem okay. Left me alone to my own devices for a good hour with the keys whilst I looked the car over inside out. Not pushy at all and I had to go and find them to talk specifics.

Did you try clearing all the codes and see if they come back when started up and running ?

Wonder if thats the original radio, someone could've been playing and coded something wrong, has it had many owners ? if 1 owner maybe take their details and give them a call ?

Looks good. Low mileage for it's age which may not be a good thing as it has a DPF...

Its just a minefield. Everyone on VW forums have been having issues around 60-80K on 4 year old cars with EGRS and DPFs. Plenty more cars out there with higher miles than this which are younger but its just a gamble all round.

I suppose I could have a look at the ash and soot levels tomorrow. Any idea on what a high level would be ?

Has it 100% got a DPF ?? also depends on what type of journeys its been used on.

I think so. It is a CR engine with the CBA code. DPF and EGR are the most expensive way of keeping your tail pipes soot free in my opinion. Just such a flawed design !

I think the car would have been used on short journeys if I am guessing. One lady owner and only did 9000 miles in the first year and it goes on from there.

Like I said always a gamble with used cars and a new EGR and DPF is around 1.5 to 2K to sort out.

I had a read about the other error code you sent me the link for. It may be linked to the radio. The radio looks original, however I have a spare Symphony II 6Cd changer which I would throw in it anyway.

I am just hoping it is not something more sinister like a water leak as it threw up codes for the brake lights (need to check they work) and the front passenger door module which could be anything from the speaker (need to check it worked) CL motor to the window regulator or indeed a broken wire somewhere on the car. I wonder if the number plate light bulb would cause this ?

I hate buying cars. It like playing Russian Roulette with your wallet.

Yes, unless it's been removed and mapped out but as it's done that many miles it probably hasn't as most people would remove it if it started giving them problems.

Not sure on the levels, I'm sure the information is on here somewhere though.

I agree it is a minefield once the cars out of any warranty !!

Could you stretch to maybe getting a slightly newer one with some warranty remaining ? could ease your worries a little maybe.

pushing myself to get this one as its up for just shy of £14K so its £ 5K for the cost to change as they are offering £ 9K for my golf.

I have been looking at slightly cheaper S Lines but finding a good clean example that does not need me travelling to Devon / Bristol / Essex / Bournemouth is not easy

I have always bought 3-4 year old cars since I bought my first Golf GTI on an 02 plate. The only major issues I have ever had other than service parts have been a snapped spring and bust water pump so been lucky on all accounts. However as cars get more technical they cost more to put right and are often beyond the knowledge of your local indie.

At times I feel like just going and buying a new ford focus for the £ 14K.

Is it worth going to an Audi Dealer? You'll get 1 years Audi warranty which gives you peace of mind. That's what I did and I'd do the same again if I was going to change (which I almost did recently- mines a 2009 S-line, see signature).

The thought has crossed my mind. The only one I can see at the moment is over at JCT600 in Hull

£ 450 cheaper than this red one and a year younger but only an Sline and 50K on the clock and its black which can look pretty crap if it has a few knocks on it. It does have the nice split rims and an RNSe though

JCT600 - Used 2010 AUDI A3 2.0 TDI S-Line cars for sale at Audi Hull

So whats the score with used approved Audi. Are they like new cars when you buy them and they sort out all faults or more of a sold as seen type of scenario. Never bought from a main dealer before.

I must admit Igooch when I was looking at TT's I did like the fact this particular garage was approved by Stockport trading standards and has been around 30 years..... Typed their name into Google and it didn't throw anything bad back.
If your not careful you could talk yourself out of a decent car.... Remember not everyone has vag-com and you could always buy a decent third party warranty for a little piece of mind.

Spoke to the Audi dealer in Hull re the SLine - Jesus they are hard work.

You have to make an appointment to view because its month end and they can only spare me an hour !!! Gave him the details of my px and they said if you take finance over £ 7500 you get two free services. GREAT. I would have hoped to get more than £ 6K for a 2010 VW Golf GT Tdi that I just spent £ 10.5K on buying and been offered £ 9K for.

Just seem a bit clueless to me.

Nice one Veneeringman, you have got me thinking about this red one again and whether its worth the hassle of going to Hull. Do I, Don't I, Do I, Don't I mmmmmmmmm

I hate buying cars.

When I bought mine from the dealer, I had it sent back 3 times before I was happy with it. Kept finding little things (it's black by the way), damage, scratches etc that I thought shouldn't be there when buying a used car from an Audi Dealer. They were very good to be fair and I still go to them to get it serviced etc as a result. I'm down south though so no good to you. It is worth travelling to a good dealer if you can find one. Surely people on here can recommend you one. I travel 120 miles round trip to mine.

How old was your car when you bought it from Audi ?

So in essence it was like a new car when you got it ?

I cant see me travelling to and fro from Manchester to Hull to get little niggles sorted out. The cost of diesel alone would probably make it easier to sort myself.

However if the car is pristine which I would expect from a main dealer then it shouldn't really need to go back.

It was 3 years old exactly.

Not 100% no but it was a used car. I don't think anyone can expect a used car to be like a new car to be fair.

Upon looking at the 2 cars personally the red car looks the better option in my opinion.

IMO the red one looks better out of the two. Plus you've already been offered significantly more for p/x.

If you are worried you could always get a good third party warranty and would probably still work out a cheaper. Just my 2p.

Tough place to be in, also a good one though as both are nice cars.

A3Kent. I took your advice and bought a petrol 1.8T black edition today from Audi in York. More than anything for peace of mind due to warranty.

So it's a 59 plate with 24k on the clock for pretty much the same price as a 2010 plate diesel with 60k on it and all the usual headaches of possible EGR and DPF issues as we don't do many miles.

Couple of issues with it which Audi are sorting, specifically the dent in the door which has had a bad smart repair done on it which you can probably make out in the pics. Serviced 1500 miles ago, 1 year warranty and because I took out there finance, I get two free services.

All in all not a bad deal and if out goes wrong it's under warranty.

Couple of phone pics. Only drawback is its a standard BE. No extras such as Bluetooth, auto lights, seats etc but I suppose you can't have everything. Just need to get hold of NHN to sort Btooth.

Yes, very nice, but I would say that as mine is a Phantom black Sportback with the same alloys too :)

Probably a good decision to go for the petrol in the end if you are doing low mileage. I hope you managed to negotiate a good deal and got what you wanted for your Golf.

Yes, get NHN to sort out Bluetooth, he did mine also, along with the RNSE, AMI and cruise control.

As I said before, if you aren't happy with it take it back. You should be entitled to a free courtesy car for your troubles.
