Any good VAG garages nearby? Flywheel needs replacing..

Time to get my flywheel replaced, I'm wary of giving it to a crappy mechanic so I'd like to ask; can anyone recommend good specialist VAG garages in the Bradford/Leeds/Huddersfield area?

I've emailed a few thus far, Vagco Doncaster, Vast Saab and Ashbrow Garages both in Huddersfield. The first 2 I came across on a thread posted a week or so go. Any additions?

Would probably look to get a major service and DSG service done as well... gonna be expensive

I will recommend Darkside Developments @ Monk Bretton in Barnsley. Ive had clutch / dual mass flywheel & turbo recon done by these guys for reasonable money & been satisfied on all counts. They've done servicing also on my cars. Everyone you speak to at this place know vw group cars top to bottom.....its not like when you go to main stealers & you get a faceless suit who knows diddly squat about cars!

They have a website if you want to take a look at their services.

Darkside always get a great write up.

Their website quotes £385 for Sachs clutch and flywheel for my 2.0TDI, and £200 + VAT to fit them. Which is a great price and quite a bit cheaper than my local garage can do it.

I've been quoted £240 + VAT for fitting, would this be because mine is a DSG or should that not make a difference?

Also I have a garage who quoted me £1100 including a replacement 'clutch pack'... didn't realise this was needed for a DSG gearbox? Weren't they designed to last the cars lifetime?

Could be because it's DSG to be honest. I don't think it's a bad price for dropping a gearbox and best part of a days labour.

They could be correct in that there is a "clutch pack" available. The DSG box does use a clutch, however controlled by a computer instead of the driver, so should in theory last a lot longer, however there's nothing to stop it wearing out.

They have probably quoted to change it as piece of mind, as if the box is out already, they might as well.

Piece of mind is one thing, but for an additional £500 I think I'll opt against that! Especially as I haven't had any problems with the DSG itself thus far *touchwood* .

Could always ask them to inspect it whilst it's out and then advise I guess, may slow the job down if they then need to order parts once the box is off, as opposed to having them ready for the car arriving, thats all.

They've now amended the quote to say that the Auto wasn't picked up with the registration, amended quote is £1059... for just the flywheel

Whereas Darkside Developments have quoted £950 for Flywheel, Engine service and DSG service!

I'm not sure what you mean? Don't they wear just like a flywheel on a manual?

Be very careful visiting darkside, they will cause your credit card great pain as it stretches to pay for stupidly high power engine mods...

Haha I've half got an eye on their £300 remap, the most I can afford and that's at a push!

Be careful with remapping....you'll end up with slipping clutch!!!! Most of the dual mass flywheels & clutches are matched to standard power output! If you up power you'll more than likely have to up spec dmf & clutch to cope with the increase.

Even if it was only an increase to say, 170bhp? It is a DSG..

Yep the 140bhp has a different set up to the 170bhp as far as dmf & clutch are concerned. That's in the manual but not sure about dsg.

I've never heard of a flywheel wearing out (unless you're on mega miles?) Usually they get damaged when the clutch plate overheats it and leaves deposits. Shouldn't happen on a DSG though, especially if by the sounds of it you are running std (no remap). Do you have launch control on the car? Have the clutches been slipping at all?

It's not the bhp that the standard clutch will slip on when remapped...it's the uprated / remapped TORQUE! The 140bhp uses a Sachs dmf / clutch & the 170bhp uses a LUK in standard form to cope with the extra torque that the original Sachs isn't spec'd for. Sachs now do a replacement / aftermarket for the uprated torque but in standard form there's a chance that a remapped 140bhp when remapped higher will clutch slip at around 1700-2500 rpm.

First time I have ever read that, I've always been told that they could have either Luk or SACHS fitted. But it does tally with what I've found, my 170 had an LuK setup when I took the gearbox off.

Yes, think the DSG has the same fitting flywheel/plates and has a defined torque limit (which seems to be higher than the manuals).

Cant you just have the gearbox software put on your car and up the clamping pressure to stop the slip ? as said i cant see why it would be slipping especially as you say its not even mapped.
