    Angry Haldex nightmare :-(

Hi all i am having such a nightmare with my haldex problem. To cut a long story short i took my car ( a3 3.2 quattro ) to an "audi specialist" so they call themselves. I informed them that i had a tyre rubbing sound when pulling off and turning in circles.

They charged me 170 as i asked them to change the haldex oil and filter. I get the car back and boom its even worse than when it went in. I gave it them back and they later rang me to say ahh yes sir we have found your problem you need a new diff.

After the 3000 pound quote just for the part i politely told them no thanks.

I have been searching for ages and multiple people have said they need new controllers or new pumps etc. With the price of the new controllers i need to be 100 per cent sure this will fix my fault. I have plugged it in and its showing no fault codes so am i right in thinking my controller is ok.

Always happens when the car is up for sale any help would be greatly appreciated because at the moment i feel like scrapping the pile of poo

    Cheers all

I paid £45 for Haldex oil change using local Indy.. £170 is way to steep.
Try pulling the fuse for the Haldex to see if the symptoms change/go.

Yeah tried pulling the fuse but didn't work. If your driving in a circle and you pull the handbrake up a notch the noise dissapears but if fuse is out then when handbrake is applied noise stays

sounds like the differential not the haldax coupling then dont confuse the 2 obviously you have discounted wheel bearings and swapped wheels back to front to discount it being the tyres

If it was the haldex pump a fault code would come up so you can disregard that

It does the noise turning in a left or right circle really loud so don't think it's bearings. It did have a caliper sticking so need t ando change that but I've never heard this god aweful noise before

Yeah that will be the best just getting a caliper now and that will eliminate that. I wish I could just take it to a prprofessional and get them to diagnose it. Tempted to take it to awesome gti from what I have read on previous posts

Yeah I mean sometimes garages are to keen to just keep putting new parts on to find the problem I'd just it on a 2 post lift fire it up and get it running and get a big screwdriver and listen to things and check bearings bushes tyres ect

There seems to be loads of confusion with this haldex system, I phoned my local dealer today Tyneside audi and to book the car in for a haldex oil, filter and diff oil change but was told by them that at 40000mile the oil is only recommended to be changed and that the haldex is the diff oil, I find this hard to believe that a audi dealer can be wrong.

What is the correct service intervals and is the haldex oil the diff oil??

Sorry IP for hijacking your thread.

    Cheers Dan

No mate I would say NO, you could most likely fix this easily, just take it to another dealer and see what they say...

I wouldn't ever sell my car as repairs/spares as they're loads of people out their (mostly dealers/stealers) look and know that they could fix this easily and make some money...

Besides those with least experience about cars wont bid, so end up absolute bargain for the winner n this isn't what you really want! Right!

I can imagine your local specialist drained the haldex and diff oil to change, then only refilled the haldex and left you with a dry diff. Hence the noise and yes it will have ruined your diff and it will now need replacing at a cost of several thousands.

I had the same issue with a "specialist" several years ago, they assured me they knew what they were doing. I even left them a note with the car saying "Please make sure you refill the diff as well as the haldex. As it's common issue with people not knowing to refill both". Despite this they still cocked it up!!! Luckily I was still in warranty and they knew the local Audi dealer's mastertech who confirmed with them that they'd not refilled properly. They managed to get the diff replaced at the dealer as a warranty repair. Otherwise I'd of been taking them to court for their incompetence.

Don't know whereabouts you are? But AMD Essex I can recommend for the job, they did my second haldex oil change properly and great service with people that ACTUALLY know the car and it's 4WD system.

I'd recommend you get an Audi garage, or a proper independent who knows the car, to confirm what's been done. Then tell the garage who messed it up they owe you a new diff.

I've tried them but unfortunately they have not had any dealings with the gen 2 haldexs. All I need is a garage I can take it 2 and they diagnose the problem. Don't think there's anyone out there tho
