Turbo gone :( - Could do with some advice

    Hey guys,

So a great start to the new year... I've nearly gone blind and had to have retinal detachment surgery and now my turbo has gone on my car.

A family member took it into audi for me and asked them to give it a once over and to do the following:
    • New turbo
    • the starting is lethargic in the morning when its cold, advise
    • diagnose the resonance in the back of the car between 60-80 (most likely down to the propshaft donut?)
They've got back to me and said that the turbo needs replacing (fair enough) and the battery because thats causing the poor starting. But the resonance in the back of the car is down to the turbo (I call bull****).
Oh and they want £1650 for a new turbo and new battery (not sure if this is including vat, need to double check).

My question to you guys is, would it be more economical to get the turbo refurbed or to get the turbo from elsewhere, if so any suggestions?

It's probably worth mentioning thats its been remapped and I don't want a cheap **** turbo!

you could buy a brand new turbo from tps for a lot less than that and either fit it yourself or get an indy to fit it , please dont buy a cheap aftermarket one from ebay it will be knackered in a few months , also dont get a recon same applies . i would rather buy a good secondhand unit rather than a recon . sounds like the battery could have cell damage and is loosing cranking power .

resonance no idea without hearing it .could be a number of things

theres a genuine secondhand unit for the 170 on ebay for £200 if you dont want to be spending loads .

Afew guys on here do turbos...........xman750 and Dan@Beachuggy turbos both do great deals on replacements or hybrid or whatever route you wanna go down. Give them a PM and see what their prices are like. A lot cheaper than the dealers.

Alongside changing the turbo you should consider doing an oil service and maybe replacing oil feed lines. Thats what i was advised to do when i bought mine (which i still havent changed). I thought my turbo was going, turned out it was two massive boost leaks, so i still have mine sitting around at home.

Cheers guys, rang around garages and one indy suggested going hybrid so phoned turbo dynamics and they recommended:
    MD550 Stage 2 Hybrid Turbo for Golf/Passat 2.0TDI 170bhp engines MD550 Stage 2 Hybrid Turbo for VW Golf 2.0TDI 170bhp engines [MD550] - £1,030.00 : Turbo Dynamics, Turbochargers & Performance Products

Anyone had one of these before / heard anything about them?

nephew had one for his 170 a4 which is very similar . cost him £1300 inc vat from them .then a remap at rs in leeds £ 500 . turbo struggled to get 235bhp . masses of torque though, too much in fact .
hell of a lot of coin for 30 bhp . swapped it not long after for a golf edition 30 . since then the hybrid turbo is dead hotside melted away .
turbo is or was around 8 months old .

That's what I heard that they run hot, something to do with the EGTs?

Thing is, I wouldn't want Rick the tuner to push the car, I would want a smother torque line than what I have now (I have about 190 as it stands) so maybe push it to 200-210. I'd want reliability over performance.

So probably not worth it then, I just have this upgrade bug - e.g. if something breaks, replace it with something thats better!

iv had at least over 50 done for diffrent cars
and they can and do last very good miles
    buying secondhand is a gamble

the recon route is a gamble just like secondhand ,but if you read the warranty for a recon turbo it always states to replace the oil feed pipe to the turbo and it has to be fitted to a competent trained mechanic . ive stood in the garage before whilst we have had these arguments with turbo companies on the phone when they try to wriggle out of warranty claims on recon turbos.

yeah i agree all turbos should be refitted with a feed pipe and oil and filter
kinda daft not to and i wouldnt replace under warranty any that hadnt been fitted with new feed pipe.
but if fitted correct and a fault shows then they will sort them on a claim.

Turbo Dynamics are a reputable name. I ran an MD376 on a pd150 for over 30k miles with no issues whatsoever, but my car was custom mapped and EGT's weren't excessive. I would choose one of their units over a recon'd one every time.

At the end of the day, turbo reliability is partly down to how the car is mapped.

Regarding the resonance through the back of the car, I get this at a specific rev range, usually about 2.5k revs driving steady, most noticeable in 5th or 6th gear. Can be quite frustrating and I generally just accelerate a touch until it goes. No idea what causes it though, maybe a slight exhaust issue??

I bought the car at around 68k, 11 months ago and it's now at 97k. So in a year it's basically done 30k which is quite a lot for the car and it doesn't help that I haven't been as easy as I could of been on it. The main things I've had done to it are:

    - Rebuilt gearbox
    - New turbo
    - New set of pads
    - New clutch
    - New Dual mass flywheel
    - Also needs a new propshaft/new bushes to stop resonance at 65+.

So basically its a new car, however, in your case I'd say those parts are likely to go relatively soon anyway (but who actually knows, they could last till 200k+), but having the map put on it will definately increase the likelihood of the parts going sooner

Best thing I did was get warrantydrect because they've paid out, but if you do decide to go with them, pay a little bit more and get a higher labour rate (which I didn't).
you had a new turbo done recently to it, and its gone again?! I would see if there was warranty on that new turbo if its been under a year
