Buying advice - thoughts on 1.9 TDIe

I've currently got an A3 2.0 TDI Sport 55-plate which i'm looking to change. I've seen a nice 1.9 TDIe with a good spec on an 09-plate and was wondering what are people's thoughts on this engine?

I'm not too bothered about having less bhp and would welcome better fuel economy. Wondering if I might miss 6th gear though!

I have just traded a 1.9 TDi for the 1.6 TDI which is the replacement for the 1.9.The 1.9 engine is absolutely fine approx 45mpg with £30 road tax per year. the oil was replaced ever year. The only down side was the engine was a little noisy

We have owned a 59 plate 1.9tdie for just over 12 months; the main attractions being the 12 month £30 road tax and the high mpg. It is a great car to drive but does only have the five gears, the fifth being particularly 'long'. However the DIS and the gear change indicator are great aids in returning a high mpg. Short trips and running around town over 50mpg is achievable and high 60mpg on motorway runs (if you don't accelerate hard). The downside is that there isn't much ompf, but that's the nature of the beast

    Cheers for the feedback.

I am a little put off by the lack of oomph and don't like the sound of a long 5th gear. The £30 road tax is attractive but it doesn't sound like the fuel economy is much different. Might have to look for a decent-speced 2.0...

1.9 has a proven track record for reliability (ask minicab drivers) but is noisy coz its got the PD engine with only 8 valves.
the 1.6 has 16 valves and has a commonrail engine which is more refined hence quieter.
both engines are very economical regardless of how many gears it has or not.
i have had the 1.6 as a rental car for a month and its smooth an refined, and apart from that
i dont see much difference between the two.

also, dont think that cars with 6th gears are more economical, both have the same 1st and 5th gear ratio but '6 gears' have 4 in the middle instead of 3.

    Someone back me up?

Think if I was going to opt for the 105bhp engine I'd go for the 1.6TDI. Prefer to stick with the 140bhp 2.0 though, want a bit of oomph!
