Please could anyone give me guidance on fitting cruise control .I have a a3 tdi sport back 2005.(with an onboard computer)
I've just rung Audi (Bolton). I gave them my reg number and they said I would need a new steering module as mine is not compatible. Would they be correct or would they be guessing?

Only way to know 100% is to check with vcds, although if you have a dis then it should be possible to fit.

Mate, if you already have an on board computer with trip stalk, then you 100% have the correct module.
Dealers know jack and don't have no real knowledge. Even if you had a MFSW, they would still have said you still need a new module.

Chances are high you have the AH module which is totatally fine.

But if you want to check with VCDS for peace of mind, check the P/N in steering module 16. It should begin 1K0 and end AH if you currently just have trip.
