    Head cylinder cracked A3 2.0 TDI S-LINE 06 100k

Hi guys only had this car about 4months now just had basic service. Took it too Scotland on the 27/12/13 came back on the 30/12/13 traveled about 1100 miles. Got home coolant light came on,top it up gone another 30 miles came on again I then top it up again to take to garage at this point it has the all the known thing too be head gasket white smoke gunky oil. The garage sent the head off, it turns out the head is cracked in few places, head now needs replacing (omgfml). The bill is looking at around £1600 is this right??. The car would stand me in at neally £8000 now. 1st decent car I bought thinking I'd go for and audi and It would run for ever. Am I likely to get more problems I love this car and I'm having the work done as dont think I have much choice, should I keep it?im not sure now. It's been remapped so I was told.

Could you guys tell me ur opinion on these issues that I've spoke about would be much appriciated.

    Thanks

when you say the bill...what are they doing? Reconditioning the head or a new head entirely?

Mines the same year, I was hoping these sort of issues would have happened to the previous owners if they were going to atall, that's a big bill to be hit with after only recently getting the car (which looks great btw), bad luck mate.

Well you probably have the BKD engine like me, I only found out that this particular model suffers from a few common problems one of which is a cracked cylinder head after I bought the car, if you do a quick search on the forum or google you'll read plenty about it. I was just hoping that any such problems would have happened sooner rather than later and that I might have been lucky enough to have avoided them *touch wood*

A Brand new head casting is around £5-600 and then all the parts would need swapping over between the heads.

A complete second hand head may be the way to go.

    VW Golf Mk5 2.0 16v TDi BKD 140 BHP Cylinder Head 03G 103 373 Cyl Head 1968 cc | eBay

Either way with labour and parts I wouldn't expect much change from £1200 . £1600 does sound a bit steep to me but It all depends on what there labour rate is.Are they changing the cam belt while they are at it.

I'm not certain you can have a cylinder head reconditioned and have it come back without any cracks in it which were there originally. Reconditioning will give you new valve guides and seats, bearings, etc. but won't make a fracture between two galleries disappear. New head would be the only way.

Don't blame me for your ignorance and stupidity. It's entirely your own doing, and nowt to do with me.

Haha this statement made me jump straight onto google, no there are millions of these engines on the road, not all will crack, majority will get away fine. I'm itching to get out of work to see what code mine has....oh yea.. work...better get back to it!

EDIT: Apologies, the code i'm talking about is A, B or C as mentioned above. - it's described well in this thread.

rev. C has the fewest cases of cracking. In that topic says none cracked but I think that was the case at that time. Meanwhile I've heard of C rev. heads cracking too. Not that often as the previous ones though.
Be happy and enjoy the car. If it is to crack than your state of mind wont prevent it, so...
