Don't think they meant shorting the battery out.
If you remove the negative terminal and touch that lead to the positive lead it drains all the power from the capacitors in the ecu so erasing learnt information.
No harm can be caused because with the terminal removed from the battery there's no circuit made.

You don't short out the battery read the post, You remove a lead from the battery the negative is good and then short that negative lead to the positive on the battery. This will remove any residual charge from the modules that is stored in capacitors etc.
Any plank that shorts the battery has no right to be under the bonnet in the first place.
This will not damage any modules. Or I wouldn't have suggested it.
On some cars you will need to reprogram stations on the radio or enter a code.

you would still need to remove both battery terminals or you'll blow something by shorting the battery to earth.

Bluefin superchips stage 1 remap - honest review

No if the negative terminal is removed the battery isn't connected to earth.
All your really doing is joining the cars circuits together without the battery so there's no power to do any damage.

You'll always find a story or someone not happy with any well known reputable mapper , the best of the best make mistakes , as long as they rectify it with compo then all good.

    Yeah pretty much bang on.
If they rectify the problem and pay some kind of compo I'd be happy as long as the car drives well.

Doing that makes the whole car live & it can easily short to earth through anything that touches it ...including a person.

Have you ever seen a capacitor blow? They like to go pop and typically take out other components in the process.

I'm not sure where this is going and obviously not helping poor Sliced.

But for one last time for anyone who doesn't understand.
The battery gives power but only when the positive and negative terminals of the battery are joined together.
With one terminal disconnected its like the battery isn't there as it's not in the circuit so NO damage can be done.
I didn't suggest this but agree 100% that no harm will happen to the cars circuits.
Anyone who doesn't believe this or has their own ideas on this, please don't do it.

Can we please get back to poor Sliced original thread.

do you have vcds ? if so see if you can connect to the engine ecu and copy down the hardware software numbers at the top . that way i could send you an original map for your car so you can load that . saying that ecu may have to be put into boot mode for flash to work ,worse that that bdm may be the only way to resurect your ecu .
not trying to make you feel worse but if you have lost all comms with the ecu then the file they sent was either really bad or the checksumm was incorrect

Careful when mucking about with batteries. As said, if you're unsure, don't do it.

    Or....

    ...bad stuff can happen.

    I said
"Try disconnecting the battery earth lead and short to the positive for 30 seconds to see if that helps."

If somebody takes that as short the battery out then as I said they shouldn't be messing under the bonnet in the first place. The 2 cars burnt out when people tried to jump start them is again another example of somebody who didn't know what they were doing and shouldn't be under the bonnet of a car. I try to provide helpful solutions to peoples issues and problems. I assume they have a bit of basic common sense but I see on some forums that may not be the case.
For the record I have a HND in electrical / electronic engineering. I worked at Lucas Engine management systems for several years on fuel injection units, Trip computers , dashboards etc. I have been playing with cars for over 30 years so maybe sometimes I should try and explain in very simple terms for the avoidance of doubt.
And I have seen lots of capacitors when they have blown up , I have fixed plenty of switch mode power supplies in my time.
I will say no more I hope you get the car sorted.

I'm sure the module keeps the original ecu file to put back to standard if needed. But that's no use to you as the cars not recognising the Bluefin.

Don't discount the Bluefin as I've got it on my S3 and it has been fine, I'm very happy with it.

good news, MD got an employee to go in and managed to get my ecu back to original stock map. Feels slow, but suppose its better than nothing. Hopefully they are going to sort me out with a new map sometime at the end of next week when they re-open.

Great news, now go use a company that will load a map and test it for you to make sure its 100% ok

I have always been of a mind, where a map of a car is concerned - don't do it cheaply, get it done by specialists in the field.

The files department have sent me a new map, seems much better having a mapped car now again.

However now two thing ive noticed, a strange squealing noise and the car gave like a tin can rattling noise from the engine when parking up! will have to investigate this further

I'd personally dispense with the e-mails, call them & direct them to this thread, as they're not exactly covering themselves with Glory.

    Contact:
    Superchips Limited Head Office
    Buckingham Industrial Park
    Buckingham MK18 1XJ

    Open weekdays 8.00am-5.00pm
    +44 (0) 1280 816781

Can't you reload the original map or drive up to Superchips with the current map & have them load a decent one there?

I'd email you a copy of my original file, but a: I wouldn't know how to get it off the handheld, & b: I'm not certain the if immobiliser code would be included & render your car useless again.

Can't you reload the original map or drive up to Superchips with the current map & have them load a decent one there?

I'd email you a copy of my original file, but a: I wouldn't know how to get it off the handheld, & b: I'm not certain the if immobiliser code would be included & render your car useless again.
Cheers, gave them a ring, and they said that my email was the next thing they were going to reply to.... how convenient lol. looking like i might just have to make a complaint!

you know ...thinking about it, I seem to remember a tinny rattle from my car when I originally loaded the map, but it didn't last more than 30 seconds or so and I thought it must have been down to timing changes taking place before Auto ECU adjustments caught up.

Is yours doing it constantly on idle now you've driven it a few miles with the new map, or has it stopped?
