GFB DV+ internals question... With pics

    Guys... n gals..

Had planned from the start to get my s3 stage 1'd .. Got my car booked in with Brodster and really looking forward to it. Read numerous threads on here about this and that, about failures, where to go wrong/right.. anyway

Looked at my car and it had the RevC DV installed to decided to uprate the internals with the GFB DV+ internals.. Took the Dv off the car and swapped the internals, real easy took about 10mins.........

I've read all the relative posts regarding this part and thats why I purchased because its had nothing but good reviews, but just want to be sure about this before installing back on the car....

Having a look at the new internals though, i'm slightly worried about the piston. Its not fixed in securly like the old 1 with a rubber seal. Anyway.. the angle the dv sits on the car and if theres no constant pressure on the face of the pistons, with bumps through general driving the piston with simply just fall out down the pipe... i'm worried about the bumps just fitting it back on the car...

So my question is: Is there enough constant directional pressure on the face of the piston to keep it in place, i'm worried that if there is no pressure then the piston will simply fall out down the pipe, which cant be a good thing... I'll post some pics so you can tell what i'm talking about .....

The DV as it sits with new internals:

    [IMG][/IMG]

Piston easily comes out with minimal force:

    [IMG][/IMG]

Is this the flow of constant direction pressure? :

    [IMG][/IMG]

I'm a relative noob with engine internals, but very willing to learn..... Cheers in advance for any replys...

Ahhhh.... So according to this video, the piston is slightly wider than the inlet... Took it off in the dark, so didnt really get a good look inside.... Will fit tomorrow and see how I go...

I didnt even know there was an update for k04's? What comes with it? I've googled that and cant see anything regarding any upgrades.... Only a kit upgrade from a silver plunger to a black 1

Extract from Mk6 Golf forum ...
We have been busy here at GFB addressing the issue of a small handful of customers who appear to be having some issues with our new DV+ leaking in their vehicles specifically the Golf R. This has apparently only been an issue with VAG vehicles fitted with the remote mounted factory diverter valve, where they have been experiencing a fluttering/ leaking sound under load at mid RPM since the fitment of their DV+. As it is a concern for any of our GFB products to have issues, we have promptly looked further into this.

The DV+ was primarily designed for direct fitment to VAG vehicles which had the factory diverter valve mounted directly on the turbocharger compressor cover. However since the pre-release of this product, we have also found direct fitment to vehicles with the remote mounted diverter valve using the same part. This fitment has never until now been an issue for us, since the vehicles which we have tested them on have been fairly standard/mildly modified VW Golf R’s.

It appears that the factory remote diverter valve mounting block runs a larger diameter inlet bore than the turbocharger compressor mounted models. This is a concern as it actually plays a huge part in the valve area ratio of the forces acting on the DV+ piston. Although it is not a problem on all of these vehicles, this is still not acceptable. We have seen factory mounting block diameters ranging anywhere from 18.8mm to 19.7mm, so there clearly is a tolerance issue on the factory part which we must work with. Essentially, what is happening in the practice is these remote mounted units are only just partially trying to open the DV+ piston due to the incorrect piston/face area ratio. This is only with higher than stock boost levels. Still not acceptable.

Our solution: We have nearly completed an almost identical design DV+, but using a larger piston diameter. This will completely eliminate any issues, and ensure 100% fitment on every vehicle remote mounted diverter valve. These New DV+ replacements are approximately two weeks from being available. The current DV+ will continue production unchanged for all VAG vehicles fitted with direct turbocharger mounted diverter valves."
Orig post here GFB DV+ Diverter Valve Kit - anyone tested this? - Page 2 - VW GTI MKVI Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVI Forum / VW GTI Forum - Golfmk6.com

Mine came with a second packet with a different piston and spring.

Technically it's a plunger that is replaced for the K04 cars - it's the smaller grey part in the pic below

I was thinking if one if these until I read the more recent reviews.
There seems to have been issues on k04 cars hence the upgrade kit.
You can tell by the length and design of the piston if you have the upgrade kit.
Also the few people that were reviewing these initially said they were great but at least 2 of them have sold them and there's another for sale now which nobody seems to be buying.

I'd be interested in your opinion on this setup.

There are 2 different versions of this piston, silver and the black one!
Silver was intended to use on both,k03 and k04 vehicles but operating on k04 is different
so they needed to do an upgrade version of the piston and that's the black one.
When you order,do not forgot to tell the seller that you need an upgraded version with number T9351
(Thats only for users with k04 turbine)!!!

I am very happy with mine, car is a lot more responsive than with RevD and it pulls like a train all to the red line!
For me it made a big difference because RevD had a broken membrane, actually i ruined two RevD's this year
and i still cant believe it!

It was a money well spend!

    Cheers

Its the gold piston i've got with mine as shown... The only changes I had read about previously was the silver and black plungers... I'm gonna re-fit this tonight so i'll be able to tell if its a better fit and any boost leakages..

That link to the Mk 6 golf forum dates back to August. Since then the revised versions of the DV+ have been for sale at various outlets in the UK. Mime came from AMD. Read the rest of the thread and you will see that Brett the engineer from GFB has had some useful input.
There is quite a lot of confusion about the names of the various parts.
The brass part that will fall out of the end if you are not holding it in is called the piston. This is the part that needs the smear of engine oil. It is worth giving it a good lube and see if it is a good smooth fit in the body of the DV+. I pushed my piston in and out and rotated it to find which gave the smootest action in order to ensure that there was no chance of it sticking.
You have to hold the piston into the unit as you are installing it into an S3 as the unit points downwards. If not, the piston and spring will want to fall out. Remember to do the same and hold the piston when uninstalling as if you drop the piston on the floor and dent it the piston will be ruined.
The other part in the body of the DV+ is the plunger and this needs to be black in colour, not silver like the version 1 of the valve. You also get an uprated plunger spring that must be used instead of the OEM spring.
My S3 is at stage 1 with a Pipercross filter and I have no complaints of the valve so far.

The part was bought direct from amd, so it did come with the black plunger

Well fitted it to the car and initial report is good... Tested the piston against the inlet and it is bigger... Fit the unit and took for a brief test drive... Had a listen with the windows down and it does make a rather different noise compared to the standard DV when I could hear it over the cai... Test drive was ok, dont know if its placebo or not but you can tell a slight difference in pick up from the standard dv.. Very slight though... Anyway car is booked in on Monday with Mark and looking forward to it... Wanted to get these parts fitted 1st so I could benefit with the best map for the parts being run so the car didnt need to have a slight map tweek after they were fitted... Be able to tell a lot better after monday on how it is... I've just spent a cpl of days driving a stage 1 s3 and its far more alive than my own, so looking forward to getting that feeling out my car also...

Plan to get the car dyno'd into the new year and will be looking forward to see what sort of figures i'm getting, but hopefully looking in the 310-315hp range with the cai fitted also..

Just to confirm so there is no confusion, they do only come with one style of solenoid plunger now. There are NOT two different types on sale. Any DV+ purchased will come with the black revised plunger with spring, which will work with K03 and K04 cars.

We have had the revised version since the start of September, so any purchased from us since then will have the revision, If anyone purchased one before this out of the original batch with the original plunger please get in touch and we will send out the revised parts to you FOC.

If any one would like one, we have lots of these instock and they can be purchased via our website, phone or ebay.

Its a doddle to do mate. Torx bit and a ratchet handle is what you need. Disconnect leckie plug from valve and undo the 3 torx screws and withdraw valve. You then pull out the innards of the valve and replace with new GFB DV+ valve remembering to lube the piston. Its then simply rebuild. Simple job and what a difference it makes to the driveability of the car

For some reson my DV+ made my car slighly slower but smoother with better dsg response. However OEM DV gives nice shove in the back when the boost kicks in. There is a lot of info regarding this.
