Just a general thought iv been thinking about recently, what speed do you guys find gives the best mileage to ur a3?

State your engine size, fuel type, year atleast so we can see how much of a difference there may be.

I have an 2.0 TDI 2004 and on a clear motorway I feel driving at 60-65 mph gives me the most range.

A3 tfsi Quattro 60 mph returns about 35mpg

A3 2.0 TDI sportback 58reg 75-80 on motorway returns 55mpg.

1.9tdie

40mph in 4th - around 80mpg

No one drives at 40 on dual carriageway though, usually get around 55mpg at 70mph.

1.6fsi 2005

i usually am 55 - 60 which returns 43mpg roughly

as long as it does more than 30mpg i couldn't really care less, thrashed the nuts off it today and still achieved 55mpg

2.0 tdi is great on fuel, however driving it like a saint and trying to get the most mpg is the reason the turbo veins stick, needs to be blown out on a daily basis!

My old 2.0tfsi quattro... 6 miles of roadworks (40mph average speed cameras) 6th gear 40mph for 6 miles returned me an average of 40mpg, the highest i've ever seen from any of my audis

so 40mph in 6th gear is the optimum speed for me...

You'd probably return more if you changed how you drive, 6th is for cruising but 40 would be too low in my experience, you're making the engine work harder you'd likely see 45 if you were in 5th possibly more in 4th

40mph in 6th gear uses less rpm and therefore uses less fuel... I dont drive like that normally and thats why i've never seen a return as good as that again... The thread was to state the best return youve seen and what was your optimum speed etc... Well that was mine

Thats fair enough, but just because you're using less RPM does not in fact mean less fuel, if the car is in too high a gear it requires more effort to maintain that speed/effort therefore less MPG

Try cruising at 40 in 4th 5th and 6th whilst feathering the throttle and you might see what I mean, I've seen 50 MPG @ 55 in 6th on a B road, down shifted the MPG went up to 62

Just something to think about :)

I agree with stiggles, 40mph in 5th uses less fuel and gives more mpg.
55-60mph in 6th gear on my 2005 2.0tdi gives me 60-62mpg. I do it every morning on my way to work on the A2 as there are always too many cars on the road to able to go any faster. But I like to thrash the car when I get the chance to keep everything clean and working. :)

Never seen my mpg as high as today sitting on a long flat road cruise on at 70

I dont understand how thats possible though?? If your car is using less rpm then surely your car is using less fuel.. If you can cruise at 40mph at 1500rpm and then drop it to 5th where it would be sitting a 2000rpm doing the same speed, then surely sitting at 1500rpm doing the same speed as opposed to 2000rpm is surely gonna return a higher miles per gallon... any maths genuises on here? but I would think that was more self explanatory??

My S3 seems to be happy at 60mph and not so happy at 70, past that though I find the momentum carries it forward and I get better MPG than at 70..

Best I've managed was 42.9 mpg on a 178 mile trip and that was mostly 65/70mph.

got 57mpg cruising at 65mph the other day for 30 miles. 07 2.0tdi SB 170 s line dsg

My first Audi was A3 1.6, 4th gear/ 30mph returned about 40~45mpg, 5th gear/40mph retuend +50mpg easily...

My second Audi was 1.8 TFSI, 4th gear/30 mph, hardly about 30~33mpg, 5th gear/40mph returned the 35mpg

My third car Audi S3, 2.0 TFSI Quattro, 4th gear/30mph returns 26 ~ 28mpg, 5th gear 40mph returns 30 ~ 34mpg

Also have a 3.2 V6, 4th gear/30mph returns 22mpg, 5th gear/40mph returns 25mpg, but I usually drive it on 3rd gear around 2,500rpm/30mph and returns 22mpg most of the time :)

that last one is shocking!

i get 22mpg out of my e46 m3 driving it like I stole it , not dropping below 7000 rpm if I can help it, launching it between lights and generally trying to slick my tyres. On v power nitro though, if you believe the lies shell feed me it gives you more mpg because its a "magic potion" .

TBH it isn't that bad... but one of mates has e46 M3 and returns him around 15mpg on shell nitro+, believe it or not but M3s ain't that great on fuel, not sure how you manage to get 22 on yours and obviously with the way you're driving it..

Is yours SMG or manual?, I've seen many people having so many problems with their boxes, manual is far better specially for M3...

I could get around 25~26mpg but not bothered as I must then drive like a granny :racer:
Also I do use Shell Nitro+ and I could honestly say it works far better than regular ones TBH, on regular fuels I guess it would only return 19mpg

Using V-Power on my V6 costs me about 40 quid for roughly 130 miles and that's realistic...

I did the maths and came to 20.3 mpg and that's start/stop town driving and no motorway at all

29.37 Liter = 6.4 Gallons

130 Miles / 6.4 Gallons = 20.3 MPG and that's realistic and has nothing to do with reading from odometer as I don't really trust that :nyah:

Well you get about 4mpg doing 170 on a runway of course !

But I think my average in my s3 is 24 that's with town driving and spirited driving which is not too bad I don't think

Guys, The question was "what is your optimum speed?" meaning; what speed do you do to get the very best mpg, that's not the same as Average MPG. ;)

Most i've ever got was 54mpg from mine and that was doing about 65-70 over 180 miles.

Most I ever got in my 2.0tfsi was 34mpg and that was mostly going down hill.
