On start up, when it's cold, the engine sounds louder and holds the revs over 1k for around 60seconds. Once the revs have dropped it sounds fine, the car has always done this but is this normal for the tfsi engine?

100% Normal.

Do you mean it sounds like a vacuum at first?

Normal.

Thanks for the replys, was worried as my previous cars never did this, well if they did it wasn't as noticeable.

mine is the same. sort of like a buzz for a second then it goes.

It doesn't buzz, it just ticks over at a louder sound whilst the revs hold over 1k. But as soon as it settles it's as quiet as a mouse but it only does this when the engine is cold.

Yup that's fine - it's the cold start map which increases idle speed to heat the catalyst quicker for better emissions.
