    Angry Audi Corrosion..

    AudiBodywork.jpgAudiBodywork2.jpg

I am a fairly new owner of an 8P S3 - And my god what a car! :D Wash time Sunday i noticed this..

This is fairly amusing - The fact that Audi UK Have REFUSED my corrosion claim and are now attempting 'Bribery' - although they state that this is a defect 'from factory' with the paint.

Paint step readings - Came back fine - This is original Paintwork...

This is what i said to Audi,

I found a little spot of corrosion on the vehicle which I forwarded to Audi (Guildford) for their comments and took the vehicle for an inspection - To which Audi UK have rejected the claim, sadly.

According to them the issue is a 'Dirt in the paint' defect. Now I did not spray the vehicle - So Audi should be liable to rectify the issue? All paint step readings came out accordingly so no paint has touched the affected area since factory. As you can see by the images it is quite an odd place and something I have not seen before. I believe Audi UK have also stated that it is because of its age? The vehicle has completed a mere 58000 miles and is only 6/7 Years old. I have not just paid well over 10k for a car that is 'old' ! My concerns are if moisture gets underneath the affected area this will become drastically worse over time - So would like to deal with it early on but do not see why I should be responsible for further expense on my part.

I do believe that this is quite the Luxury brand as Manufacturers are concerned - and I didn't expect that response from a prestigious car maker.

    There reply was:

    Hi Dan,

I have had a response from warranty today reference the claim.
Unfortunately the repair is not covered under warranty and there is no goodwill available, this is because it is surface corrosion as opposed to through corrosion.

I understand you will be disappointed with this decision, please let me know if you would like an estimate for the repairs.

I called the chap dealing - He stated over the phone that he is adamant this is a defect from factory and that clearly previous owners didn't notice.

Audi are now saying its a 'Stone Chip' lol !

So i said that i thought there Blunt decision is a bit of a joke. Chap will phone me back.. !

    Got the phone call back:

They suggest that before it gets escalated to Audi UK - as a dealership they will try and help me out.
The whole Rear 1/4 panel is to be cut out - under warranty, and replaced.
1 week without the S - They will put me in a courtesy vehicle.

In return - I have to show my loyalty to Audi by purchasing a service (Oil/Filter) amounting to an astounding £365

As it was just serviced independently before i bought it - This would be a waste of time.

I asked if the price can be jiggled and can i have the works done now and service next year (Nope cant do that).

    Call you back Sir,

Call back a further half hour later,

" The price has been adjusted to £159, but you have to have the service done within 2 months"

Whats the point in draining perfectly good oil to put new back in. There ISNT!

Another call back - Okay pay for the service now - We will get the warranty work done and have the service done in 2014.

Okay - Not bad. This seems to be the best i can get. Which is still POOR and its virtually Bribery!!

Whats your thoughts on this Audi guys?

I've had 3 8P's and all have had similar marks there.
My S3 only had 11k on the clock when I bought it.
I'd rather put up with the mark than have them re-paint it.

Ah really - What did you think it was? Is it likely to get worse. My concern is patchy paint - Not a good look !

Infact both my 8L S3's were the same thinking about it.
    Small stonechips I'm guessing.
Has gotten no worse in my 3 year ownership but I put mudflaps on it as soon as I got it.

£159 is their standard (over)price (ed) for a minor service. £365 is a Major service iirc.

As far as the warranty goes, because you didnt buy it from Audi they are probably unlikely to help, unless you did they should honor it no questions asked!

I bought a 2008 Civic type R before my S3 from a Honda dealer, after the first few proper washes i noticed the paint on the rear quarter was bubbling underneith, it went straight back to them to have it sorted aswell as various other marks around the bodywork buffed out & the roof repainted because of a known rusting issue by the windscreen, oh and a new clutch/flywheel.

The dealer/HUK paid for it all to be done under warranty and i was left with to be fair an almost totally unmarked 2008 CTR. However i very quickly got fed up of it after having all that done, sold it and bought my dream car.. which is my S3 :D Someone got a mint CTR, just had 5 previous owners!

Almost every second hand car is going to have some marks and unless you inspect it in perfect light when its clean & dry you wont notice anything out of the ordinary until you do a proper wash and detail!

It'll forever bug the hell out of you! Accept the bribe & have some peace of mind. Don't accept a shoddy repair though.

You're seriously going to let them cut out the whole rear quarter, replace it and repaint it for that, one, little bubble?

Hi mate im a panel beater and work in a audi vw approved garage. I too own a a3 8p. Mine had these marks to. In quite a few places tbh. It bugs me yes but id rather leave them than have a load of paintwork done. They are stonechips theyve probably beem there for years and not got any bigger. Most probably wont as all panels are now zinc plated. One more thing, they are having you on by wanting to put a new quarter. Tell them no. Thjnk about it, they gotta cut the 3 joins, disturb all the welds, cut window strip alot of the car down. Your gonna have filler in 3 places to cover welds. Not what you want. All that for a little scab under paint. Just tell them to grind back etc and repair paint the panel.

Thanks for all your input guys well thats it i was thinking for a tinnnnny bubble there on about cutting the whole panel out because its 'infected' ? Lol! I said just smart repair it or something to which they replied "no way" !

It seems to be an awful lot of agro for not much gain, and possibly a mismatched coloured car. Which i am not up for ! Didn't realise this fault is so widespread! Just thought id share with you guys! - Think i may just leave it and service the car myself next year for tuppence :D Winning!

No problem and yeh neither would i, the audi a3 has a rather large c pillar as well which means more filler. If you grind away properly and etch prime or zinc primer, it will be fine.

For the sake of the £150 you "have" to pay for the service to get the bodywork done, i would take it to a reputable paint shop, I'm sure they will repair it for around the same price and to a better finish i would imagine!

How can that possibly be a stone chip?

    ^^+1

if it were a stone chip the surface would have to be pierced - even a pin sized hole, but there's no mention of that.

So you think it can be permanently solved by grinding away then treating, before respraying it, Ben? ...furthermore, Is the dealer just trying to get extra costs out of Audi UK for something that could be a relatively quick fix?

Yes as it is only light surface corrosion... a sufficient grind back and etch and zinc plating will be adequate enough. Tou only need to statrt replacing panels when corrosion is deep and excessive. But bear in mind it will happen again due to stones being flixked up of the wheels. Take a look closelt at the bottom of your sills and doors will find loads more
