Just went to start my 57 plate s3 and when i turned it over it started juddering on idle like it was misfiring. Exhaust sounded like it was spluttering and engine sounded louder than usual and just not normal. Is it more than likely either plugs, leads, MAF sensor or coilpack? Im going to check the plugs, sensor and leads tomorrow when home from work.
thanks for any help as im new to the site and only had the car coming to a month now

Anyone? Plus i cant seem to find link to remove the engine cover either if anyone can help with that?

thanks

I'd try plugs and coil packs first off.
If the management light isn't on I'd try plugs first.
Does it clear if you try and rev it or not?

No mate no lights have came on to say anything, i revved it few times not hard though because it was late infront of my girlfriends house but it didnt clear when revved up to about 3/4k rpm

Has it had plugs recently?
As above that's what I'd try first
hmm couldnt tell you mate, it has a good service history with audi but not with the papers at the moment to double check. If it has should spark plugs basically last ages?

In pretty sure spark plugs are every 40k but I've heard a few people having misfired etc after 18-19k
If you go the genuine spark plug route it'll be around £40 and if buying ngk or something similar about £25

its completely standard so i read the 'spark plug' thread and seen that he has gave a product number for the plugs to get for standard engines. What plugs you recommend mate? Bosch or ngk

I personally use ngk.
For a standard car I'm sure it's something like BKR7EIS on eBay they're about £25 delivered.
If your in a rush you'd maybe be best trying your dealer.

on my way to halfords within the hour mate thanks for the help and will let you know as soon as i have some news

So other day i went to take out my plugs and then realised i didnt have a long enough adaptor for my socket set. So before i swapped any i thought id hook it up to vagcom my mate is coming round only on thursday (due to being busy) to hopefully find the fault. Once the fault has been found ill update you all and let you know how it is when fixed.

Any news with this then Jack?
okay mate ive had a lad round and done a diagnostics on it and luckily its saying its just a coilpack so im going to get one tomorrow hopefully and have it running again for the weekend ;p

Glad it's something simple mate.
a set of plugs and the offending coil pack changed will do it the world of good.

sunday is last time i drove it been too long lol going to give it a good well deserved blasting

Think i should have the s3 back today after taking it the garage yesterday. Ive been told it waa misifiring on all 4 cylinders :/ he has swapped all 4 coilpacks and plugs and been told itll be fine. Just awaiting phone call to be told i can pick it up. What would cause it to misfire on all 4 cylinders? :/ seems bit strange

I think they are just covering all basis.
If they've plugged in with vcds and logged it at idle it will show misfire on every cylinder. Don't know why just something the tfsi does.
The good thing with getting all 4 coils changed and plugs is that should be the end of it.
If you only change 1 coil then a few weeks/months down the line another will go.

glad its done anyways its something off my mind now. Cant wait to have it back

So yes anyways i have a update on what the problem was/is! The head has been removed and have found that a flap in the inlet manifold has snapped off and got into cylinder 3 which caused the no compression. The head is being took away from audi to a specialist who i sorting it out and have other stuff on my invoice which needs replacing. It is costing me just over £2200 to repair all in inc cambelt and water pump which i said to change at the same time. The list of replacements:Manifold, X4 gaskets, Repair kit, Bolt, Tempsender, O ring, Nut, Sump plug,Filter, Oil, Cambelt, water pump, And labor (meant to be £120 per hour got it £85 per hour)Ive had a look around on the internet including this site and havent seen anything on about this flap snapping off, i take it it isnt a common fault on these and that im just really unlucky? Before anyone says "shouldnt of gone to audi" i have learnt my lesson and going to go a VAG specialist from now on.
