Help, possible fuelling issue with 2.0 TDI BKD

    Hi all,

I've recently noticed a strange problem with my 53 reg A3 2.0 TDI BKD 140. When the engine is cold, it has a reluctance to accelerate under load from around 30 mph to 70 mph. It does eventually start to, but after a lot of juddering, as if its not getting enough fuel. The problem disappears once the engine is warmed up but since my journey to work is only around 5 miles it hardly ever reaches 90 by the time I get there.

I've done a quick search which has pointed towards the tandem fuel pump or injector loom. I also changed the fuel filter last week as it was jet black but the fuel didn't look too full of oil.

Has anyone ever had similar issues?

    Thanks

    Adam

Sorry and dont take this the wrong way but if your engine is cold should you be putting it under load anyway until it's warm? If you drive 10 miles a day is a diesel the right car for you? Related to your problem, have you tried removing the tuning box or temporarily disabling it?

No worries , I appreciate your input. I removed the tuning box and it made no difference, the problem was still there. Regarding being better off in a petrol, I was thinking the same thing but when I bought the car 3 years ago I was doing around 80 miles a day so it made sense. Also as I'm only on this work placement for another 10 months its not really worth making the switch to petrol.

I always try to let it warm up before accelerating hard but after 5 mins at 30 mph I have to join a busy motorway so need to get up to speed quite quickly and that's when I notice the hesitation/ juddering.

    Hi

Mine has been the same way, when it was cold it seems like it ran in limp mode, after a few mins the car started to respond better.
Last night i got the throttle changed and cleaned the egr valve, the car runs much better. even tough the check engine light is now on, but this might be a encor or something (i hope=

Thanks guys, I'll check out the egr and throttle at the weekend.
I put some redex injector cleaner in with the last tank of shell and it seemed slightly better at the time. Could have been because it was warmer weather at the time as its only noticeable when its less then 20 degrees outside.

May be worth seeing if someone local to you has VCDS and can help with scanning for any possible fault codes mate! Check the VCDS section

Just had Gary come do a scan on the car and it came back with the following codes:

    3 Faults Found:
    17668 - PD Unit Injector: Cylinder 1 (N240)
    P1260 - 000 - Implausible Signal
    Freeze Frame:
    RPM: 1764 /min
    Torque: 256.0 Nm
    Speed: 26.0 km/h
    Load: 55.3 %
    Voltage: 14.21 V
    Inj. Quantity: 1.27 mg/str
    Temperature: 45.0°C
    (no units): 16.0

    18074 - PD Unit Injector; Cylinder 1 (N240)
    P1666 - 000 - Electrical Malfunction
    Freeze Frame:
    RPM: 4662 /min
    Torque: 202.0 Nm
    Speed: 39.0 km/h
    Load: 70.2 %
    Voltage: 14.44 V
    Bin. Bits: 00101000
    Temperature: 25.2°C
    (no units): 16.0

    16685 - Cylinder 1
    P0301 - 000 - Misfire Detected - Intermittent
    Freeze Frame:
    RPM: 882 /min
    Torque: 46.0 Nm
    Speed: 0.0 km/h
    Load: 0.0 %
    Voltage: 14.36 V
    Inj. Quantity: 2.96 mg/str
    Temperature: 33.3°C
    (no units): 128.0

Am I right in thinking its the injector wiring loom that's causing it as it's not consistently misfiring.

A bit hard to say if it is an injector fault, or the loom. Perhaps better to change the loom first and see what that brings. If no improvement, then change the injector. Hopefully the loom is the problem, as it has been on many BKD engines. Good luck.

Thanks guys, the Ross-tech site advises to change the harness before the injectors so I think I'll head down to the dealer tomorrow and order one. Does anyone know the part number? Is it 03G 971 033L?

If it turns out to be the tandem pump let me no. I've got a brand new one sat in my cupboard.
The injector loom is £90. I ordered one yesterday.

Well 6 hours later, the new fuel injector and glow plug harness is in, new camshaft cover gasket is in, new tyre is on and car is back together running like a dream.

Thanks to Gary for coming to scan it with VCDS and thanks to everyone who helped me sort this out:D

    Hi Adam,

I have the same issue. Is your car still running OK, did you ever clean out the EGR valve too?

    Thanks

Hi, a few months on and its still running great. Didn't bother cleaning the egr valve out in the end.

I had mine on vagcom, typical though when we did the drive to get data it didn't hesitate! All injector values were ok.. Was yours on off like that?
