what happened? well at 92650km the car was taken by Audi Canberra to do a cam belt and waterpump service on the car.. they forgot about the bolt dropped it and sealed it 12,000km later this is what happens... do they want to assume liability no they dont when i clearly have written proof its their work that has caused this colossal damage.. asking me to tow it to and from my workshop pay for the damage and then they 'may' compensate me...

next steps im going to the Fair trade Australia to have them dealt well..

now for the damage workshop told me they well attempt to take off the crank gear... (which needs replacing) HOWEVER they are telling me that the crank can be damaged ... is this possible ?

also been advised that the belt might have skipped a tooth .. however the engine sounds normal idling and under heavy load to be honest.. as i drove it in that condition to the workshop (not knowing)

Really sorry to hear about this!

hope you get it sorted at their cost

chilly

do you guys think the crank would be damaged though as in the likelihood ?

Sevv,that's awful workmanship.

I'm really sorry to see what's happened, although on one side at least you have a reason for all the problems, but they ought to pay for that.

hey alex do you reckon the crank could be damaged if so ill need a rebuild.. or even would it be possible that the belt skipped a tooth ?

It's quite possible for the belt to skip with that piece of shrapnel floating around in there,if it got in between the belt and the teeth but it's difficult to see how the crank could be damaged unless the engine itself had been damaged.

that was my thought to be exact... however the engine is running smoothly...not getting any knocks underload and at idle.. no misfires or any of the sort hence why its got me thinking....

It's stories like this that make me hate handing my car to anyone, you have no idea who's working on it, they're hidden away behind plush dealerships so you can't speak to the mechanic and suss him out, and if something goes wrong their first instinct is to deny all knowledge...

Shockingly bad CS & workmanship, but I am not entirely sure its done that much damage tbh, belt has been damaged & the teeth slightly, but I think you maybe extremely lucky as its probably just bobbled about along the teeth & got crushed between the block & the pulley, lets hope anyway.

thats what im hoping for badly to be honest as an engine rebuild is out of the question this has already set me back 2,000 AUD and probably another 700 AUD for the gears, covers etc...

ill know tomorrow if the crank is fine.. and im thinking them same as if the belt jumped a tooth or so ill sure feel it wouldnt i ? the car is just running normal..

as for the oil leak really not sure where its coming from

the tensioner was loose according to the workshop too so no idea really.

Get on with citizens advice or they might be able to put you on to a specialist in this department to come and have a look etc and put things in there own words

it's so sad that I have to feel everyone's an idiot until proven otherwise. Pride in workmanship is difficult when management is pushing the limits on profits. I guess I am becoming too cynical and must remind myself that I should not always set low expectations to avoid disappointment. I can tell you that I leave ASN happier than when I came in as I always see people helping each other out. I must say I am fortunate to have a master audi tech as my friend and remember that I met him through an AUDI gtg. It's always reassuring to have a fellow brother repair a car as you know they will treat your car like their own. Not everyone has a Nigel, Nate, Alex or the other countless ASN enthusiasts who provide great service here. If you do, then count yourself very fortunate:rockwoot:

small update:

called Fair Trade Australia , been advised i HAVE NO CASE! as the contract for the cambelt service was with the previous owner and not me.. and it was a private sale so i guess ill have to foot the bill... Audi Canberra don't seem to want to repair the A3 either.. when it clearly is there fault...

only other option is to go after the previous owner which is all the way in a different state! ill know soon if the crank shaft is damaged.. and unbalanced..

im only thinking if its worth keep the car after fixing it... given the crank isnt damaged as there is the possibility it has skipped a tooth

ANY ideas guys ? :keule:

just received a call from the workshop the crank is damage as metal fragments from the crank gear were lodged between the gear and the crankshaft itself killing the seal.. engine is out of balance so its an engine build... car is off the road for 3-4 months now

Hi mate,

That whole thing is just awful news.

What options do you have?......would you consider a full build and BT conversion as the car will be in bits,or just fix it and move it on?

Can i ask you guys for a favour to help my cause, ive just posted on Audi Australia facebook page .. in relation to the damage that has been cause as a result of there work.. would u guys comment or like it maybe that will push them to do something about it ?

well im fixing slowly as the budget permitts ... its getting calico big end bearing ARP head bolts... tsucan rods.. supertech inlet and exhuast valves with titanium springs and retainer kit.. leaving the pistons as is .. hopefully dont need to replace the crank itself and can be rebalanced and machined

new pistons rings and new oilpump

i was told the pistons are good for 600-700 hp

Good morning Sebastian,

As it has been explained to me, and after talking with you this morning it would seem the original problem with your car was from an oil leak.
It is my understanding that you believe the work that we carried out over 16 months ago for the previous owner has lead to the oil leak and other issues associated with the tensioner and belt.

I also understand that the affected engine components have now been removed from the engine. You mentioned to me today that the car has also had two services between the one carried out by us and now. You have owned the car for the last six months.
With this information in mind and after viewing the photos you have provided, most of which are poor in quality, I believe Audi Centre Canberra can not be held liable for any of the damage or problems you are currently experiencing with your car.

We base this decision on the following:

1) The 90k service was carried out on your car on behalf of the previous owner over 16 months ago at 92000k’s. I understand the car has now travelled 106000k’s.
2) In the 10 months following the car being serviced here and you purchasing the car it is possible that further work has been carried out on the car and those repairs have lead to the problems you now have.
3) Any issue you have with the car regarding previous work is something you should take up with the previous owner.
4) I understand all services carried out since you bought the car have been done at a local workshop and not at an Audi dealership.

If you feel you need to raise this problem with the department of Fair Trading please do so. I will be away on leave from this afternoon and on my return in two weeks will be more than to discuss this with you.

Regards

David

if the initial cambelt job was done before you bought the car, I'd expect the laws aren't much different in your country as to ours, as you say, no case

its no doubt that from what I can tell, the work they did was substandard and they are responsible for the damage, but privately sold vehicles (in our country definitely) carry no warranty anyway and are "sold as seen", thus ceasing any warranty covered by previous owner service work

this is why in most cases when we buy second hand cars, cambelt done or not, we often get them done anyway for own peace of mind. its a shame its turned out like this

i agree and its a loophole.. its like saying if you run someone over with a car that you sold 2 weeks ago the new owner has to pay for the mistake of the damage/ crime carried out when the car was registered in your name.. yeah i agree with you that , this is the legislation however its not right or fair.. especially in this case.. they deserve it being shown on their Facebook page to say the least.

in a new update Fairtrade Australia... has asked me to send a letter of demand to Audi Canberra so i guess they are letting my case through

the representative said the quality of the workmanship was not up to the standard of my reasonable expectation or the legislation, thus causing damage.. explaining to her my case she said it may go ahead

would like to thank other for posting on Audi australia FB page again it means allot to me.. and its nice to see like we are a big family of audi lovers :p willing to help out. THANK YOU GUYS AGAIN!
