It's just the surround mate. No difference in what the device does.
I think you might mean the difference between the 2 types of RNSE units (Mk1 and Mk2)? The Mk2 units do tend to have more with the glossy surround it would seem but I think you can still get the Mk2 with the standard grey surround as you call it.
Mk2 units are quicker, hold more data on the SD cards and have a High Def screen. All round much much better.

Ah ok, well it could have been a retro fit so might be the older mk1 type RNS-E. Might be worth clarifying this with whoever you are buying it from. You can tell what it is from the HW and SW that i've told you how to get to above.
