    whats wrong with my s3 - been overrevved and misfiring

    last week noticed my audi s3 was not driving right - just did not have the power there and seemed to be misfiring - i took it back to Bradford Audi to have a look at it as it was where i bought the car from - turns out at somepoint the engine has been overreved and Audi cannot do teh work under warranty,

    not sure what to do next, im getting my local garage who i know well to have a look furthur into the problem.

    any idead? been told it could be a big problem

    How have they come to the conclusion it was over revved? Sounds like total BS to me!

    Surely you can't over rev your engine as it has rev limiter with a limit set by the manufacturers software so you can only rev it upto what audi have set as a safe limit within the design limits of that engine ?

    get back to the idiots and ask them to explain how you can over rev a car ?

    You can over rev it by downshifting when you should be changing up,i.e. if you're at 7000rpm in 4th,and you hit 3rd instead of 5th.

    Yes,you will hit the limiter,and fuel and ignition will be cut,but the engine will still go above the limit,and valvetrain damage would be the most likely thing,but transient over-revving unless it's extreme,shouldn't be a cause of misfires,as the damage would usually be of a more terminal nature.

    However,that doesn't answer the original question of how the dealer knows this,and why they won't honour a warranty.

    forgot to say engine managerment light did not come on but emissions light did

    You will get a fault code for max rpm exceeded that will void your warranty possibly by selecting a wrong gear as above happens to me all the time when I get a s?&t call out.

    tell them the throttle stuck just before you had issues!

    I can hand on heart say I have never downshifted when I ment to upshift. I imagine that getting 2nd when u mean 4th would be pretty nasty

    These fault codes relate to hit I wonder if they are logged for good (17968/P1560/005472) as they would be classed as serious big brothers watching could try and tell them its a breach of human rights not good.

    Give it time!

    I've done it once in a Cosworth,getting 3rd instead of 5th,but thankfully the engine and head were built with 8000rpm in mind.

    Porsche monitor revs for the life of the car.

    one of the checks they do when selling the car is to check the rpm history.

    so this kind of monitoring isn't new.

    Its a shame the car wasn't scanned before you went to audi as if it did have codes for having engine rpm exceeded you would have had the time ,date and mileage shown with the codes and maybe it occurred before you owned the car if not the 1st owner maybe the code is still logged.

    That'd just run in to the rev limiter so wouldn't cause any immediate damage like a mechanical over-rev would.


    In response to the OP, you say the car doesn't feel right at the moment? That sounds like it has had good power before and ran ok? Then I would say the mechanical over-rev (if true) has not caused the problem you are seeing now. The damage would like be immediate from an over-rev like that.

    See if you can get this over-rev record cleared and take it elsewhere? Unless AUDI black mark the car across the network??

    If the ECU logs over revs in the same way as the Porsche ones do then there will be a time and date stamp against the over revs - if its in your ownership then i can see they will not honour any warranty repairs, but if it was prior to your ownership then they sold the car with potential issues and should resolve.

    Find out when the over revs happened

    well its bad news it happened in my ownership and audi are refusing to do anything - basically theres a misfire on cylinder 2 they have said - looks like its going to be an expensive job by the sounds of things, audi have quoted me £5500 for the following work lol lol lol, basically gotthis e-mail telling me the possible stuff it needs, obviously im not that daft enough to pay this kind of stupid figure and will be takign to autotechnica most probably in hull if i dont get rid, sorry but this is the ****est car ive ever owned and i will nto have another audi tillthe day i die,

    Good afternoon Mr Robson,

    This e-mail is in reference to our phone call yesterday, I can confirm the following:

    To fully identify what is required to repair your Audi S3, we need to remove the cylinder head and fully inspect the components inside the engine.


    We have created an initial estimate (this may change subject to stripping the vehicle down).

    This estimate includes replacing:

    Labour time to remove cylinder head and investigate.

    Cylinder Head
    Exhaust Manifold
    Turbo (may possibly be damaged)
    All Associated Gaskets
    Bolts
    Seals
    O-rings
    Engine Oil
    Antifreeze
    And other fitting related items

    The estimate to complete this work would come to the total of £5515.48 inclusive of VAT.

    But I must stress, this price may alter up or down depending on what we find once the engine is stripped down.

    How long ago did you buy the car. You should ask to see proof of what they are saying re over revving.

    I am sometimes in brigg for work, i dont think its too far and would happily call by and scan the car for you before having you shell out elsewhere for estimates and work you may not need. With any luck it will be an electrical fault or at worst a slipped tooth on the timing belt. Obviously a compression test may be called for, but again rather than have the garage do it, see if you can hire the tool to do this yourself, (if its a desel probably not a good idea to compression test yourself though).

    EDIT: I see its only recently been purchased, I would like to say if there is ANY electrical fault on that car right now, my argument would be that the logging of the over revving fault could be a faulty reading in itself. My bet is unless you have seen the codes, theres probably a missfire count and a knock senser warning. I would be fighting for warrenty regardless, remember if within 6 months the car develops a fault they need to prove to you that is wasnt faulty when you took the car.

    hi jon i gave up in the end - audi hull where useless and actually no longer wnat to serve me as i had a rant at them, i got it done at a specialist in the end got the engine more aless rebuilt cost me a lot of money but under half the price audi were wanting, car runs mint now - just out of interest have you had a similar problem jon.

    Think so, not in no rush to do thou, I need a couple of operations so can't afford to do it yet, but as soon as I'm able to work again ill have a look, I have a problem thou I'm not getting any power to anywhere apart from interior lights, I think it must have something to do with the CECM unit but I can't find it on this model. Audi aren't to shore where it is, they think its on the pass side behind the glove box ......??
    You would be surprised how cheap a brand new engine is from sump to rocker £2365+ vat so just short of £3000, that's brand new no refurb or exchange, I just need to find this unit also I need to no if I buy a second hand CECM can it be coded to my car also if anyone knows what happens if my old unit is totally dead and can not be read to get any information off it ie immobiliser code or what ever is needed so my ecu and clocks and keys all work together. I'm sure this unit is shaved and at the moment I can't comunicat with the car for any codes cheers John , if anyone can help with regards to a second hand unit that would put my mind at rest cheers

    Just to let you know mate ive just got my car back from audi, i had a misfire problem which was caused by a plastic flap snapping off in the inlet manifold which lead to other problems meaning the head had to be stripped down sent off to a head specialist to check/clean the head to send back to audi and rebuild it. I also had all gaskets changed which is a obvious and new manifold, tempsender, o rings and other stuff that needs replacing due to this job etc etc i also needed a new pipe replacing which im not to sure what it was for but was leaking, i also asked for cambelt and water pump change whilst it was already stripped and all this cost me £2468 this was at £85 per hour labor charge. I feel that quote of £5515 seems very high as it sounds like same needs doing as mine did

    It sounds to me although not stated above the original issue was probably caused by a bent valve or two, when the engine is really over revved the valves tend to float and will contact the pistons. Looks like Audi were possibly correct in their diagnosis, The ECU does record the maximum RPM that the engine hits and obviously if this is excessive they wouldn't be expected to cover that.
    Although £5500 is a lot of money you could have got a good second hand engine for a lot less and put it in.

    No m8, I've got the car to turn over and seems fine but I can not get it to run, I not it turning over will not tell me if its ok but at least I no it's not a badly bent con rod, which is what I thought when I bout it, but why will it not bloody fire, and still no clusters and fuse seems fine but I'm not sure if there is a relay for them
