DPF Delete + Stage 1 on my 170 for one whole day and then failed DMF :(

I've had a stage one done on my 170 by Rick @ Unicorn Developments!

Rick's a genuine nice guy and you can tell from the word go that he knows what he's doing. He'd managed to fit me in on a saturday which was nice of him, it did mean getting the car to his by 8am but I figured this was something that'd be worth getting done, even if it did require getting up at 6!

Left the car with him for half a day and what can I say, we went for a test drive in it and it was a completely different car, I can't believe how much difference it's made. It's as if my car has been hungover for it's entire life.

After I payed I decided to take a trip to Wales whilst taking the bala road (as it's a great driving route), the car had so much more power, especially in third and fourth - being able to really put your foot down coming out of corners and get pushed back in the seat, for me, was worth the £600. It really makes the car feel more like a petrol, just with **** loads of torque.

One problem though... On the way back from Wales, coming out of a junction, I lost all power, so I pulled over and let the car rest, then turned it back on, thinking that would fix it.. but nope, after having to limp it back home I spoke to Rick and it's a failed DMF, which we did speak about before he did the stage 1 (as my car was showing symptoms of a failing DMF) and I decided to go with it anyway as it seemed strong enough to last, at least for a month or two. But no, apparently not.

Got warrantydirect so hopefully they will pay out (although I only got the cover, 2 & 1/2 months ago so i'm still in the wear and tear exclusion, but a DMF failing isn't due to wear and tear is it?)

Rick said his engine was probably the strongest he'd tuned which was good to hear, he thinks I'm pushing about 215bhp!

Can't recommend him enough, especially for a remap - as all his maps are done on the job, none of this generic ****!

On a side note, I didn't realise how much black smoke it kicks out when you don't have the DPF, rick says he can tone it down but i'd lose power...so no thanks!

    But thanks again Rick!

Dmf is wear and tear for sure, it provides a mating surface for the clutch and vag cars are notorious for clutches that are specced fairly closely to the stock power output so remaps usually finish them off, also there's little point sticking another standard clutch in there, it's an expensive road ahead...

Wouldn't of though that any warranty company will pay out for this seeing as how its now remapped and DPF deleted. You can only but try though.

It wasn't tuned on a dyno, you'd have to ask Rick how it was done, there was a lot of typing on the computer and then test drive, then back again, then change then test drive etc. I think I prefer this as whatever he's done works incredibly well in real driving.

The reason it was more expensive is because of the DPF delete + it's a quattro, and they require more work.

If your DMF has failed wouldn't you be suffering from clutch slip? With your revs rising really fast as the clutch/DMF can't deal with the added torque your engine now has. This happened to me on a stage 1 GIAC remap, it slowly got worse and I upgraded the clutch & DMF to a Sachs clutch and had no problems since. If your car has gone into limp mode I would have thought this was the ECU shutting down the engine power to protect itself and not clutch related?

Well I think it's a combination? The ecu has realised the DMF has failed and therefor put it into LIMP mode? I'm taking it into a local garage tomorrow so will keep you informed.

Did you go to a single mass clutch when you upgraded?

I don't think the ecu would go into limp mode for a clutch related part, under the circumstances it sounds like a map related fault, eg a parameter is out of range and triggering the fault. As said if the Dmf was buggered I'd expect the clutch to be slipping

No I stayed with a DMF as I use my car as a daily driver and was worried about the possible 'tractor' noise/chatter of the clutch. (Why won't my return button work when I'm typing replies tonight??) Also as above I don't think the ECU would know about a DMF/clutch fault/slip

The clutch did start to slip but then soon after limp mode kicked in, so now it slips a bit but then all powers taken off by the ecu to prevent this - at least I think that's why!

I use mine as a daily driver, so I think I will be replacing mine with a DMF as well, maybe a Loba uprated one though!

If you can get/have Vagcom you will be able to find out why your car is going into limp mode as the fault will be logged, may be worth checking out before you go back to your tuner so you know what is happening. Loba do good clutches as well from what I've read, not had any problems with my Sachs clutch since it's been in.

The engine won't know what happens beyond the flywheel so it should just slip and slip until you stop applying power, unless there is a flywheel sensor fault (but this is on the "fixed" side of the flywheel).

Sadly quattro's are heavy on their flywheels and clutches. Having said that, most have done a lot of miles, and a new std unit is up to the job. If the clutch slips enough you will get ESP related fault codes, as the speed vs RPM signals will become implausible

We have replaced DMF's under warranty a number of times, so there is a good chance you will be ok.

Update: Apparently it wasn't the DMF that went, it was the turbo boost pipe, the underneath one had blown off, so going to get forge motorsport ones as a replacement. DMF doesn't need to be done yet, so going to strategically wait untill next month and hope it goes then so I can claim from my warranty as I will be outside the wear and tear 90 days.

Expensive month though, DPF Delete + Stage 1, MOT, Tax and to come in the next few days the forge pipes + fitting and haldex oil replacement!

Well, that would defo explain the limp mode.

PS don't forget the gearbox oil too.

Just an update, got the new forge pipes fitted, gearbox + haldex oil & filters and it still did it albeit not as badly, took it up to rick and he did another remap, spent about 4-5 hours on it, me driving whilst he does his tuning stuff.

It's even better than it was the first time as it's been tailored to how I drive and it's great. Done 650 miles since the remap and still haven't got bored of the extra power, unfortunately after doing about 300 of those on country roads I know need new brakes as well - On top of a new DMF + Clutch!
