Had this car for around 7 months now and this has happened around 4 times but twice in the last 3-4 weeks. I have started the car and the Revs are slightly higher than usual. I have noticed the revs idle after start up at around 1200 - 1300 for about 10 - 15 seconds if that, then drop down to normal 800 - 900 after. When it was slightly higher this morning there sounded like a slight whistle as well which sounds like the turbo to me. I did a 60 mile journey this morning, left standing for around 5 hours, started it up and this happened. The journey probably has nothing to do with it but I don't know.

I know I probably need to get a VAG reading but has anyone had the same problem or any idea's what the cause is?

get it scanned or take it to a reputable audi specialist, could be anything and you could end up spending money where not needed

Used to have this on a cold start on my old car, unless anyone knows otherwise I don't think it'll be anything to worry about. On my current A3 I know I get the same whistling/whirring after a short amount of time standing still, guessing it's just the fan kicking in.
