Steering Angle Sensor and Battery not holding charge - Any relation?

Just wondered if anyone has had a similar problem, the mrs was driving the S3 yesterday with no problems, parked it at home around 5pm. Went to start it today at 8, no luck the typical battery/starter motor combination of a clicking noise.

I was at work so could do nothing so have been left with the dilemma to fix now, scanned the car with VCDS, battery light was on but no fault linking to that, only fault code I had was for the Steering Angle Sensor having no basic settings. (Ill post the log once I get chance to go on my laptop).

So I jump started the car, no problems went for a 15 minute drive and seemed okay. Two hours later, need to go back out, back to square one! My only thoughts would be the battery at the moment, anyone got any suggestions?

I'd get a new battery first

The steering angle sensor would have come up due to flat battery and may correct itself with a quick drive, or you may need to follow the wiki guide to reset it. Leave the wheel over for 30 seconds on the lock to lock procedure as sometimes it doesn't take first time round if your too quick!
 
Yeah that's what I was thinking to be honest, was debating whether to get the breakdown people out to check if my battery is dodgy. May as well make one call out for the years membership!
 
Yes the steering angle/warning light comes on with a flat/disconnected battery; it should clear after a short drive.

As for the battery sounds like a big drain or a dud battery. Check the alternator too is putting out about 14.4v with the engine running at the battery.

Thanks, well I've just gone and bought a battery after realising it has never been replaced so may have lost alll life now. Is this a specific channel in measuring blocks in VCDS so check alternator supply voltage?

Wouldn't bother. A battery place tested mine, claimed it was fine but my starting issues persisted. Replaced it anyway with Varta Silver bought online and all my problems vanished.

As another poster said to me, these cars require a stable and high quality power source. So get the Varta Silver.
 
All sorted now, Bosch Battery fitted the only one didn't seem to hold charge at all suddenly. Had to reset the basic setting for the steering angle sensor and then reset the calibration for steering limit stop aswell and power steering returned instantly :)

Hi bud,it's only started since my battery went flat,I fitted new Bosch battery tonight and still have power steering alarm.
 
Sounds like you need someone with VCDS to reset the steering angle & limits, it doesn't seem to 'learn' them itself

Simple job for someone who has a Ross-Tech lead & software
 
Just got the car back so far so good,they reset the code and told me the starter motor was bad so fitted a new one,also fitted new earth cable.starts on a button now :)
just hope the battery drain fault has gone.what sort of readings should I get AMPS when everthing is switched off
