had my air con regassed but it still not working properly, garage that done it have diagnosed it as faulty compressor and quoted £570, does that seem about right, or if i get the part cheaper through a mate is it a easy job to do or does it need to be done by a specialist

Hi i am an air conditioning and refrigeration engineer replacing your compressor is a specialist job as your system needs to be reclaimed as R134 a (refrigerant) is ozone depleting also refrigerant can cause nasty liquid burns once reclaimed the compressor can be replaced along with the liquid line drier which is probably a combined receiver then oil added if required ,system pressure tested and evacuated to below 2 torr with a vacum pump and a fresh charge of gas weighed in hope this helps.

you could fit the compressor to an empty system but bear in mind the oil absorbs moisture (hydroscopic) proper evacuation removes moisture .
you could get a company like quick fit recharge it I hope the diagnosis I correct as that's not cheap.

welcome to the club.. mine went a few weeks ago... £570 inc vat sounds about right to me. The job is labour intensive and can take 4-8 hours depending on who is doing it! so fixing the price is a good way to go for the parts and labour... there is a DIY online if you fancy saving on the labour costs and if you are a novice car mechanic you should be good.
