Insurance... due soon

My insurance is due at the end of the month. Liverpool and Victoria want a huge amount to continue, so a change is on the cards. Cheapest looks like Sainsbury's so far.

Appreciate any suggestions (its a 3.2 by the way) .................
Thanks guys.

I shopped around for the wife's insurance and,at the time, elephant were the cheapest.
However,I gave Priviledge a shout this time, and they knocked 30 off it right away, which took cheap down to even cheaper !
I think their only criteria is 4 years no-claims.

There is no such thing as a good insurance company anymore that you can recommend as they all seem to quote different figures for each of us.

I did use Livepool Victoria until renewal
Now I use Sainsburys (get a Sainsbury Credit Card first and get an extra 5% of the insurance if you use that + 12 months intrest free)
Have a look at Tesco, esure, egg, and insurancesupermarket.com

Use moneysupermarket.com for another comparison website (this may be part of insurancesupermarket.com that d3fy mentioned). Have always found them to throw up some good deals.

I notice that Direct Line never feature in 'multi quotes' such as confused.com. Maybe they don't want to pay the fees for being 'selected' by confused.com etc?

For me, Direct Line have consistently beaten all the others for 3 or 4 years, don't know why. I was sure I'd get a better deal from some of the 'new' firms.

But DL came out over 50 cheaper than all the others (over 40 other quotes) They are very good to deal with too.

Re: Insurance... due soon

The insurance for my wife's 1.4 Polo is due during November so this morning I went into the web-site of her existing insurers, Norwich Union Direct to get another quote.

Last year she paid 197.99. This years quote is 166.00. Same company, same car, same cover, same two named drivers. The only difference between this year and last year is that I now have a fixed penalty conviction for exceeding the speed limit. Obviously speeding DOES pay ! All I've got to do is get a quote 30.00 cheaper for mine in April and that will cover the cost of the fine. Strange world.

Re: Insurance... due soon

My renewal is up end of month, just had the form from Norwich Union Direct, 275.00 which is the same as last year. Was going to go with that but thought i would try insurance supermarket.com. They came in with a quote for 221.00,.................................... with Norwich Union Direct
So i can save over 50 just by cancelling my renewal and taking out another policy with the same people, same details etc, nothing has changed.

Re: Insurance... due soon

When I put the wife on the A3 insurance, the premium went DOWN by 25! A sum they sent to me by cheque.

figure that one.

Re: Insurance... due soon

I've been doing that for the past 6 or 7 years with Norwich Union Direct for my wife's Polo and AXA Direct for my A3. Each year we receive our renewal notice, go onto their web-site and get a quote for exactly the same car and cover and save money.

I'm sure they think that most people will just accept the renewal as the line of least resistance.

For example in 2001 I was paying 479.60 for an A3 1.8T Sport. The following year I paid 375.88, 2003 I paid 339.14 and then in 2004, for my A3 2.0 TDI with similar performance, I paid 312.28 and this year, AXA are no longer doing car insurance so I shopped around and I am paying 307.55 with Allianz Cornhill arranged through RAC Insurance.

In all this time it has been the same level of cover and the same two named drivers. Perhaps eventually they will end up paying me.

Re: Insurance... due soon

I have a 3.2 Sportback. I am with Admiral at the moment. Renewal came though over 200 more expensive than doing a fresh quote on the web with them, but they matched it, fortunately for them. Admiral and Elephant are the same companies. Privilege was cheaper though (part of Direct line) as they guarantee to match your renewal subject to some requirements.

Personally, I go with a company whose ability to manage claims effectively comes recommended from others. They might be a bit more expensive than the cheapest for me, but I have heard from colleagues (also an insurance broker friend) who have had dire experiences with customer service / claims handling etc from other insurers just when they need them the most - especially Tesco.

General tips from my experience - make sure that your expected mileage is reasonably accurate - it does reduce the premium if you are doing lower mileages. Also, add your wife, girlfriend, female cat or whatever as an additional driver as it always seems to reduce my premium (you don't have to tell them!) And if you or additional driver drive other cars, then say so as this seems to help too. Finally, never pay monthly unless it is free (never seems to be!) as it is always cheaper to pay on credit card as interest rates for this are normally very high.

They are,but never the twain shall meet.

Elephant wouldn't match it,even though they are the same company !

For a while I used to use the triumverate of Belldirect, Elephant and Admiral. Just moved from one to the other at renewal because the renewal quote was never as good as the new customer quote from each. Soon as I hit 30 though they became uncompetitive for me. Couldn't fault their claims handling though - 2 claims in 7 yrs and they were v good for both.

Re: Insurance... due soon

My wife's Polo is currently insured with Norwich Union Direct. Yesterday I got a quote on their web-site of 166.00. This includes Legal Cover and Courtesy Car. She is paying 199.00 at the moment for the exactly the same cover, same car, same drivers etc.

I have just gone into confused.com and their cheapest quote was also Norwich Union Direct - 144.00 + 18.00 for the Legal Cover and the Courtesy Car would be extra. So unless the Courtesy Car costs less than 4.00 per year, which I very much doubt, Norwich Union's own quote is cheaper than the Norwich Union quote from confused.com.

Personally I think it is always better to go direct to the companies own web-site for a quote. May take a little longer, but can be cheaper.

Re: Insurance... due soon

Websites like confused and money supermarket make certain "assumptions" when they process the quote which can mean the quoted price isn't the final price if you see what I mean. You then need to click through the link and correct/fill in all the details on the relevant company's site to get the true premium, so the "comparison quotes" can vary a bit compared to going direct but at least its still usually an indicator of who is cheaper based on your general profile.

I used Chris Knott Insurance when I first insured mine. They were a rather stagering 300 cheaper than the nearest quote I had (Elephant)
Just tell them you're a member of the Audi Owners club and you'll get a blinder of a quote (you don't actually need to be a member)

the real test of how much you pay for your insurance comes when you have to claim. My recent experience of making a claim against a French driver who drove into the back of me at a pedestrian crossing in the Loire earlier this year shows that Direct Line are very helpful and very efficient - claim sorted with minimum fuss and no loading at subsequent renewal - result = a happy punter.

Yup, Direct Line by a long way - infact 1700 cheaper than Sainsburys and Confused.com only check about 20 insurance companies not the 98% that their add claims!!!

31. #30

Re: Insurance... due soon

Just got a quote on Direct Line's web-site out of interest. I am current paying 307 through the RAC with Allianz Cornhill.

The DL quote appears cheaper at first at 260.40 but if I match the fact that I have Protected NCD (extra on DL) and match the excess to 100 and include Guaranteed hire car the DL quote goes up to 341.25.

It will be interesting to see what the position is when my renewal is due in April 06

Looked at many, Yahoo quote pulls up silly prices. But have gone with Sainsbury's in the end. Saved a fortune over Liverpool and Victoria.

Just wanted to say great advice Rob... I've been looking into insurance over the past few days as my car is due Monday and the best quote I've had is from Admiral. It was 385 but I just added an additional driver and said yes to driving additional cars and it's now gone down to 316!

That's with protected NCB and the alloys and votex kit declared, plus I live in a city centre and the car will be left on the street over night so I'm pretty chuffed with this!
