Hi. I've got an 56 plate S3 and I've noticed at idle it rattles a little. Only when at operating temperature, its fine when cold. I've read and searched the forum and found loads of topics relating to the TFSI engine sounding like a diesel which I can accept. The only reason I'm questioning my engine is I've drove another S3 the other day it was so smooth and had no rattle at all. Both cars have similar mileage (mine is 45,000 and the other one is 39,000).

So the question is, Can I swap the oil from 5w30 to 5w40 to try and keep it quiet once warm?

As far as Im aware, its the injectors that are making the noise mate, so the oil wont do a right lot!

You must use 504/507 compliant oil.

These TFSI's need feeding the right stuff!

Do not use a different viscosity oil to as specified or you maybe hearing allot louder knocking than you do now, infact maybe none at all.

Do you really think the outcome could be that extreme?

You want to test the theory?

The movement of the parts can be affected by the thickness, so yes if using the wrong type may cause you more issues.

Its a bit like putting "blood type A" into your body when your "blood type B"

Or asking for Earl Grey tea, and getting Red Label.

Its just not the same.

Stick to 0W/30 or 5W/30, advise the latter.
