Hi guys!

8P S3 only on idle sounds like a diesel very tapperty and rattley etc, ain't coming from the engine to the best of my knowledge I think maybe from the Cambelt aera? Potentialy could be water pump or the cam belt the tensioner?

Cambelt was done 7K ago..

Car boosts more than fine and idle is smooth!

Just abit worried everytime I get out the car and hear the devil noise lol!

Whats your thoughts?!

Thanks in advance ;)

You're sure it's not just injector noise.....direct injection engines can sound somewhat diesel like at idle.

I asked a similar question when I bought mine, a bit diesel sounding at idle. It's all good :)

If you can hear the diesel type sound inside of the cabin it will be your camshaft tensioner, chain and adjuster most likely. These are part of the timing service but it gets over looked as a lot do not realise there is one.

I have just done mine and it cost me £390 with a fuel pump follower and oil and filter including buying the tool to lock the cams in place but expect to pay over £1000 at a specialist and even more at a dealer.

If you need any more info let me know ;-), but its mainly caused from the rubbish dealer service schedule and poor quality oil they use!

Hi mate, from cockpit all sounds normal just when your outside of it! So what does that entail...

Just done a service used 35/5 castrol magnatex..

Did a long drive 20omiles was booting it and still when I reached my destination wasn't any louder...

Best thing I can suggest is get a long screwdriver and place it onto the metal plate under the side of the engine cover, gearbox side and if you can hear a rattle from there that's where the camshaft chain is situated and that's the culprit bud. I'm on my iPhone at the moment but when I get to my laptop I will pm you some info so you can check but I came from a MK5 Golf Gti so I know how these Tfsi lumps should sound but I was not too bothered with doing this job on my S3 as I bought through the trade real cheap ;-)!

Like the tensioner..? Yes that will be fine mate just pm all the details, I'll have a look at it! Just that sound I don't like it lol as you probably wouldn't :)))

No problem I will also post some pictures of the parts I replaced to show the wear on the tensioner guides from the poor oil and service schedule. The oil your using is better but I have swapped to 10w40 VAG specific 502/505 an that helped quieten things down too.

If it is the rattle like I had it will be a worn tensioner/stretched chain and cause the chain to rattle when the oil thins out at temperature as you will not hear it on cold start, under load but it will become present when not under load as the oil pressure will be reduced as that is what helps keep the tensioner under load I'll explain more in my PM bud ;-)
