I have got this standard headunit at the min but how do I know what extra wires I need to fit a new one? I have tried researching it but I haven't got anywhere.
Can anyone help?

thats isnt much info... i asked what headunit so that i can advise on the right cables.
anyway your best off talking to an audio specialist like 'Car audio security' or 'dynamic sounds' in london who can tell you what bits you need

Have you got a multi function steering wheel? Do you want to fit a double DIN unit, that's quite bit more complicated.

I'm surprised you can't find info, most car stereo dealers have quite good guides as to what connectors you'll need. Put simply I think you'll need a CANBUS adapter, the built in stereo is switched on and off by CANBUS signals, not a switched 12V the Alpine unit will need. If you haven't got a MFSW a fairly generic CANBUS adapter will do, if you have you'll need one for Audi steering wheel CANBUS signals too.
