hi can anyone help as ive bought a sline multi function steering wheel part no 8ko 419 091 to replace my 4 spoke multifunction wheel for my a3 sportback yr 2010
and am trying to find out what airbag to get to fit it
ie part number will it be a 8ko airbag
im really not sure what to do

any help will be greatly apreciated

thanks

Yes it will be 8K part number as its from an A4 2008 onwards so don't get any other as it won't fit.

thanks for your quick reply
any actual part numbers will assist my search for a airbag via ebay ect
many thanks

That wheel was also on some 2004 - 2007 A3's

The airbag you need is either 8P0 880 201 AL or 8K0 880 201 AG

thanks mike struggling to find an airbag with that exact part no will a 8k0 880201 E be ok ?

thanks

It may be ok depending on the suffix letter of your wheel. However, according to ETKA that airbag you quoted is only available in grey !

Merry christmas and a happy new year everyone
latest update on the steering wheel upgrade is after speaking to the airbag supplier and indeed buying the airbag they recommended and driving 20 miles to my nearest audi specialist they informed me that the airbag connector is not compatable with the slip ring on my car ahhhhh.
the steering wheel fits ok its just the yellow connector
my original airbag ,has a yellow connector with a yellow lock insert, the airbag supplied has a yellow connector with a purple lock insert thats the only difference

original airbag part no is 8p7 880 201 f
new airbag no is 4fo 880 201 be

do i need a new slip ring to make this work

coming to the end of my tether on this on and wondering if its worth it

any help at all appreciated

tony

Can you post pics of the inside of your steering wheel and the back of the airbag please.

I gave you the airbag numbers that were compatible with your wheel and slip ring. This may be ok but you will need a different wiring loom.

EDIT: the wheel you have bought requires either of the two airbags I identified in post #4.

The airbag you have bought is from and A6 which has a totally different slip ring and harness and will never work with your car.

Your 2007 A3 has slip ring 1K0 959 653 AD and is suitable for both the airbags I mentioned.

But ONLY those !!

hi mike thanks again for getting back to me
the airbag was recommended to me by a company that deals in airbags so i assumed they would know what they were talking about sadly not!!!
they have taken into account the steering wheel but not the car it was to be fitted to i think
by the way my car is a 2010 year 1.6 tdi se
i have attached photos of my four spoke wheel airbag, the three spoke version they recommended and the slip ring i have
if its a deffinate nogo ill be taking advantage of their no quibble refund policy and trying again following instructions to the letter

thanks again

I did mine the other week and the loom I bought has an orange plug lock like the original one, part no. 8J0 971 589 H. £42!
I think the purple one is for A4 and above?

Mine's a 2005 S/B Tdi 140 and had the 4 spoke mfsw with paddles and shield air-bag.

Can we start again because I'm totally confused (no change there then !!! )

According to ETKA the steering wheel you have bought 8K0 419 091 with no suffix letter is not multi function so there must be suffix letter/s if it is mf. Could the letters be BG ?

Does the wheel that you have bought require a round airbag or a shield shaped airbag ? I've seen the pictures but not sure which airbag is for the new wheel.

Again, according to ETKA your car has slip ring 1K0 959 653 D which is still fitted to MY 2012 but was not fitted to A4/5/6 models.

Can you PM me a pic. of the inside cover of your service book showing VIN and PR numbers because I need to work out what was fitted in the first place. Also a pic of the whole new wheel without airbag would be good.

It may be just a case of swapping wiring harnesses or buying the correct one but there are at least half a dozen to choose from !

ok mike ill try and clear this up

first my new wheel has the shield type airbag and the wheel is part no 8ko 419 091 bb xcf

Does the airbag you have bought actually physically fit the wheel properly ? If so, what is the wiring loom part number and what is your old airbag loom number ?

Sorry for all the questions but you have an A3 and have bought a wheel from an A4 and an airbag from an A6 ! Neither of those models have the same slip ring as the A3.

As a minimum, if the airbag fits the wheel properly, you will need to replace the wiring loom with one with the correct plug for your slip ring. You cannot change your slip ring. We have to find a way of converting the A6 airbag to fit the A3 slip ring !

yes mike the airbag fits fine
part no for the a6 airbag loom is 4fo 971 589 a
and for my existing airbag is ?po 971 589 q the questionmark is because the sticker is damaged

thanks again

oh also the details off the inside page of my service shedule i have posted on my previous post

Hi, ignore my earlier post as I thought you were fitting a round air bag! :uhm:

Try your own loom with the orange lock as that's the A3 colour I think. You'll see the horn wires may go to different connectors but if you study them you will see you have either two joined together going to one 'earth' tab on the casing, and one to another tab on an insulated feeder ring, or the three going to different tabs, two to earths and the other to the feeder 'ring'. If you mix up those connections, you shouldn't do any harm as they are just earth wires.

You could leave them off, tape them so they don't short, plug the slipring in and the m/f plug and give it a try before screwing it fully to the wheel.

Just swap the looms over and it will work !

The only problem may be where the wiring loom black plug has to go into the steering wheel socket. That loom is designed for the A3 mfsw socket which is at 2 o'clock. Your wheel has the mfsw socket at 4 o'clock so you may have to extend.

However, everything checks out with ETKA so you should be ok !

The missing ? on your existing loom is '8'
