Does anyone know if 10W-40 oil is suitable for a 2004 2.0tdi? Many thanks if you do!

Hi

No, 10w-40 isn't the correct choice. The oil you need depends on the service schedule the car is on. If it is on an annual/10k miles service, you need an oil that meets the 505.01 specification. If it's the variable service schedule (up to 20k/2 years), you need an oil that meets the 507.00 spec.
505.01 - VW - Engine Oil - 505.01
507.00 - VW - Engine Oil - 507.00 - VW 507.00 motor oil

They are all good oils, so make your decision based on any brand/price preference you have.

I have done over 100k and i have used 10W40 as it's thick, 5W30 is for cars that have not done many mileage like mine, please correct me if i am wrong?

At halfords when i put my number plate it gives me the 5W30 even if it has done over 100k?

With VAG diesel engines you need an oil that meets the VW 505.01, 506.00, 506.01 or 507.00 spec (depending on the car) otherwise there can be excessive cam wear. None of the oils that meet those specs are 10w-40. You only need to use a thicker oil when the car starts burning a lot of oil, but no matter how much it's burning, a 10w-40 isn't suitable for yours.
