Unhappy S-Tronic False Neutral - is the mechatronic going?

Has happened twice when -3 degrees

    1. Going up an incline (20%) braked and then accelerated suddenly, it went into Gear 1 and just revved there for a few seconds
    2. Yesterday, braked suddenly and again I think I accelerated a bit harder, back into Gear 1 and revved a few seconds

On both counts, I just let off the gas pedal, let the revs settle and then accelerated to move on
It was in 'D' mode - don't use the paddle shift much these days

Is the mechatronic on its way out?
Scanned it with VCDS but no codes.

Have driven it before in up to -8 degrees without any problems though :-/

I had this happen at roundabouts 3 times in like 6 months and have not had it since. I have done 14k miles now. I do not think anything is on its way out but there is an issue somewhere with the control side of things cus it loses the plot and just revs like its in neutral. I tried to replicate it and force it but could not. I think the quick on/off action is what messes it up and it does not know what to do. Of course, i know nothing and am only guessing at this.

Like many devices we use today, the DSG is controlled by a software program. No programmer can account for every possible set of circumstances, they just do their best. My suspicion is that these control system do have some limitations, and the best we can do is to let the system settle down again. Some limited learning may have been included in the software, so it may 'lean' what happened and program itself to cope with it next time. Be patient, the DSG control system is actually great at its job, and really does well at giving us a great box to enjoy. Cheers.

Happened probably 4 times at least in 15k to me. Jan 2012 S3.

Doesnt happen enough to worry about it. As said its software, it's gonna have a glitch or 2 along the line.

Thanks for your replies. I'm going to do some data logs and see what Audi have to say.

Today it was just loving gear 2... and revving up to redline in gear 2. I floored it to 60 and then it went to gear 3.
It's like the accelerator has become super sensitive all of a sudden. I never use the brake to decelerate, if I can slow down when possible as we all do e.g. like from 20 to 15... then I let off the gas and if goes to gear 2 it messes up... and stays there... I re-created this several times today. I think the mechatronic must be on its way... next will come the harsh 3-2 shift and eventually the PRNDS flash of death.

    Will keep you posted.

check the Gearbox oil level. False neutrals are often a symptom of low oil level.

Mine makes an occasional clunk going from 3-2, but I've never had issues like your having? But then again I think my oil is over due

Checked it out with the local indy and oil is spot on. I had the oil and filter changed by Audi at 55k miles (was over due). Took it to two different Audi garages and verified its not the oil. Haven't given the clutch hell since I've had it... the clutches should last the life time of the car depending on safe/reasonable use... everything is pointing toward the mechatronic right now... just waiting for it to get worse and for the DTC's... then will show warranty direct and see if they will replace it. Hopefully they don't play silly buggers and just pay for the darn thing.

All 3 said that the dsg should never require a top up... I find that hard to believe but I trust this indy with all my cars and he doesn't mess about. He did offer to change the oil and filter again but there is no guarantee that it would resolve anything... so its a gamble on money.

Current mileage is 70k so hasnt done bad as not had any mechatronic problem since new.

How much would Audi charge to diagnose such a fault??

It's an electro-mechanical system. Where I used to work before, we used similar systems in complex drive units.
These have tiny oil ways etc. Could be a simple blockage caused by debris.
Rather than splash out for new unit, I'd take it off, dismantle, flush/clean, re-assemble and see how it goes.

Due to nature of these designs, an oil change still leaves about 1.5 litres of old oil in the DSG/S-Tronic box.

its worth a shot... just a gamble I suppose... could be money well spent or could be a waste of money... that was the idea the independent garage had.. I may just go ahead because I can't see warranty direct helping on this one. Checked with VCDS and still no fault codes... thanks MR LAPOU
