So. My car has done 115,000 and is 'built' in 2005. A promising 5dr 2.0tdi Sport. Nice.

@ 67,000 miles this happened - http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-sportback-8p-chassis/76016-i-can-see-gearbox.html

It was changed for a brand new one by Audi master techs all brand new stuff cost us £2000 (that includes the 30% goodwill) and a lot of stress.

3 years and 48000 miles later (Serviced every time its required) the signs and symptoms have returned and the diagnoses from my friendly local gearbox specialist (NOT Audi) has suggested it is the same issue, only we have caught it a little earlier and I can't see the ball bearings yet. So this will be our third gearbox.

The reason for posting is to find out if I'm alone here? This will be the third gearbox we are over the warranty period for the work by approximately a year.

I don't want Crawley Audi to go near it as I can't trust them as far as I can drive the car at the moment.

Any thoughts?

Never heard of that problem before ! I've got exactly the same car as you with 87k on it and have no problems at all (thankfully) !

However, now you have posted no doubt others will chip in with info.

Not heard of these gearbox issues before. Mines at 80k, got a bit rough at one point but smooth as silk after a gearbox oil change

Out of interest, why did you not go down the "not fit for purpose" route last time?

Mine strarted making noises in neutral at 35k, it then developed to the point it was making the same noise in first. Got told it was the flywheel, got that replaced at my cost but noise was still there. Car hit 50k a couple of weeks ago and the noise actually got so loud it was embarassing so i contacted Audi who wouldent help. I sourced a second hand box from a 2010 s3 with 19k on the clock, got that fitted and at the moment it seems ok (a little noise in neutral sometimes but disapeers after disengaging the clutch once...but i swear this is how the other one started...)

Looking at my old gearbox open bell casing side i can grab the shaft and it wobbels in and out by about 1-2mm which is massive for something which is supposed to have no movement at all - well out of tolerance levels....

LAY SHAFT bearing dead!!! im currently in a battle with Audi uk trying to get them to acknowalge that theres a fault with these bearings. Eventually the shaft causes the bearing seating to grow larger in the casing thus maximising the wobble even more causeing the bad sound and eventual failure....

underrated components even for non modified cars.... COME ON VAG SORT IT OUT, admit theresd a problem with these box's...!!!

Cheers
