    Turbo, opinions on a postcard please.

    A3 2.0 TDI [140]

    my turbo is starting to make the fabled siren noise, its not ‘too’ loud yet and its less obvious when the engine is up to temp - but never the less its there in the background between 1000-1700rpm.

    I’m due an oil change so this may quiet her down, but knowing my luck I can’t rely on this as a fix.


    I’ve never had any issues with power, smoke, etc and its never gone into limp mode on me, but that’s not to say it will – I guess it could just go bang?



    So I'd like your opinions on my options which as I see them are:


    Option 1, pay for a refurb now – I have some the mechanical competence of a sausage, so I’d need a garage to take it apart / exchange it and fit the refub.


    Option 2, wait until it goes and get the AA to take it to a decent indi garage where the will do the above and the AA will pay the first £500 under the ‘parts and garage’ cover.


    The down side with option 2 is if it blows spectacularly the damage it causes will far exceed £500 but possibly not by the cost of doing option 1 as a preventative method.


    I don’t see an option 3.


    I’ll obviously change the oil asap but I doubt it will fix things.

    Option 3, get a hybrid turbo and install that! search for turbo technics on google

    I would definitely rule out option 2, if the turbo goes it will send oil down the exhaust and also in to the intercooler so they will have too be stripped and cleaned resulting in a lot more labour, am with ash on this one if it needs changing then go hybrid you won't be disapointed!

    bight the bullet and buy a brand spanker from TPS!
    new standard turbo, oil feed pipe and service parts plus fitting all in for about a grand!
    my veins on mine kept sticking and going into limp mode shortly after buying, but luckily i was covered by a warranty!
    this was at 73k miles!
    i stamped my feet and threw my toys out of the pram in the garage i got the car from, and got the work done,( they were not originally going to mind! ) and it pulled like a train after this, and the turbo noise was very quiet with being brand new!
    a lot of money granted if out your own pocket, but if you want to keep your car as its supposed to be, and you are keeping it for a while, OEM is the way imo!

    Thanks for the replies - I knew you were all going to say this - I think I just needed it justifying!...unfortunately it will be my own pocket but you don't buy an Audi if you can't afford to maintain it I guess!

    the good news is its booked in for a service next Saturday, I’ll pop it in beforehand and get them to price it up.

    The bad news is I have to do a London to Edinburgh trip before that … still it’s fun living by the seat of your pants isn’t it :P

    tbh a reconditioned turbo shouldn't cost more then £400 to be supplied and fitted!

    brand new turbo for £600, £50 ish to fit, i would also buy an oil feed line and an oil return hose as well,
    OR
    buy an (exchange) reconditioned hybrid for roughly the same cash from the likes of CR Turbos :: HYBRIDS,
    or Hybrid performance - Turbo Technics,
    both of these companys will warranty their turbos too,
    there was a second hand BKD hybrid turbo in the classifieds a short while back that was being sold by Darkside Developments, i cant find it any more maybe give them an email???

    Do the test of going up a steep hill with a load and the accelerator floored in 4th or 5th starting at very low revs. My Golf would conk out at 3k RPM under load in 4th and go into limp mode with an overboost code.

    Until it does that I really wouldn't worry. Many of the stories of turbos blowing seem to people driving like idiots. One guy on the VW forum was showing off outside his workplace, engine was cold, he floored it and the turbo blew!
