Hi All, had my A3 in for ther MOT today, the brake pads warning had come on so i knew they would need doing. Theyve rung and said it needs new pads and discs all round, and 1 of the rear calipers has seized so needs replacing. Cost is £560, what do you think, should i try else where or does this sound like a fair price?
Failed MOT, what do people think of the cost to get it through, reasonable?

Had a look on eurocarparts since posting, for pads discs and the caliper and the wind back tool its gunna be going towards the £400 mark, and ive never done it before myself so could take me a while, im thinking the price might not be too bad.
Considering the cost of parts including a new calliper and brake fluid, sounds okay to me.
Oh and while they are at it ask them to change the brake fluid for which they may not charge since they are working on the brakes. Worth a shot.
If you've never done before, I'd leave it alone.

I have just done my rear brakes on my 3.2 not that long ago i got the pads from TPS £50 the wind back tool £35 ebay. The rear passenger side was done in about 30mins that's from ground to ground really straight forward to do but the drivers side the caliper had seized i managed to windback the piston and had a look it seemed to free off but the rubber seal that protects the piston as it comes out had a hole in it so it needed replaced so I sourced a 2nd hand caliper from eBay for £60 I had to rebuild the back drivers side with the seized caliper I took me 2.5/3 hrs to do the pads on the drivers side ground to ground then when I got the caliper it took 45mins ground to ground to do the drivers side replacing the caliper and bleeding the brakes.
Would I do it again.

Ive managed to haggle them down to £480 now so getting it done. The MOT is due on Sunday so havent really got the time to source the parts cheaper from ebay and other places so dont think the price is too bad now. Next year ill get it in earlier for the MOT so i have more time to sort out any problems.

Asa comparison, I had discs and pads all round on my 3 series and that was about £500 with a good Indie, so your price sounds about what I'd expect on the A3 (and what I'm budgeting for on mine when the time comes).
Decent enough price for all work to be carried out too. Doing it yourself is cheaper but if something goes wrong it's a pain. I replaced a brake disc cover on a golf a few weeks back. £8 for all parts, luckily I used a garage of a friends with all air supply so took me 30 minutes with ramps etc, doing it on the floor with jack and axel stand would easily add 45 minutes or more.

Plus, find a good Indie ad they will sort out any issues you have. After I had the beemrs done the pads were really squeaky, took it back after 6 weeks ro so and they replaced the pads all the way around, no messing. I may even use them for my Audi, even if they're a BMW specialist...

Pads squeak because of vibration on the contact points. Typically copper grease will resolve this issue. Alternatively mintex brake paste is another way round it. I would of thought they would do that first?
Don't get me wrong, good service if they replaced pads but just would of thought that would of been tried first?

They had it a whole morning and then phoned me and said they weren't happy with the result so were swapping them, so i assume they tried various things before doing that. They were perfect afterwards mind.

ahh damn not enough time... if anyone is interested i have the disk and pads with calipers and carriers for front and back from my 2.0TDI available for sale... need to make a sale thread but havent taken pics yet.
was only looking for £150 for the whole lot... all in fully working condition, pads are virtually new and the discs barely have a lip on them

No, they were spot on, Emtec in Salisbury, like I say a BMW specialist although I suspect for those guys brakes are brakes
I woudln't mind finding a good Hampshire based Audi indie mind you...Would of had them Ash if you'd of put on earlier. Had all the work done now and passed the MOT, just an advisory that 1 of the tyres is getting low, so if anyones selling 1 let me know.

Surprising you were in Salisbury and didn't use Autowork who are an indie VAG specialist. They are down on the industrial estate by the railway station.
There's also a VAG indie in Eastleigh, only about 400 yards from the main dealer. I forget the name. In anycase I prefer Autowork.

Been using them for about 3 years for both our cars. Only stuff I get done elsewhere is the MOT because I do that at a garage around the corner from work for convenience. If Autowork were closer they'd do that as well.
They are ex VAG mechanics so they know what they are doing. The loan cars are hilarious though. Last time they gave me a old Seat which was like a motorised rollerskate. Perfectly fine, just "interesting".

sounds like c.v. joint i just had to do my passenger side one giving the same noise also when turning right
If its dealer then I say thats pretty cheap and genuine parts are always worth the extra i ten to find non gen discs tend to warp easy.
also take it from someone who just had to o both rear calipers get he little brake pipe that connects flexi to the caliper changed as they an snap on the way ou and you'll be proper p$"£$d off f they have to order one
