The 2 buttons (mode and the one on the other side) appear useless. When are they used? Thought mode would have flicked through radio, cd/tv, nav etc....

'Mode' button changes between whatever you have selected (radio/cd) and telephone if installed. If telephone not installed, it does nothing.
The other button allows you to answer the phone if bluetooth fitted. If not, it does nothing.
I think that in either case you need to have RNS-e fitted

I see, so no telephone and no Bluetooth then no function. Shame, I really would have expected that mode button to flick between radio, nav, cd etc. never mind
