    Audi Quatto learning curve

    So my Haldex has failed, and I have tried a new controller to no joy, it's looking like a new rear diff - Great.

    Having looked at my service log, I notice that between 2008 - 2011, it had a couple service with XXXXXXX. I know this place well as I spent two years between 2009 - 2011, working up the road and walking past it at lunch, small world.

    Anyway so at this time it had its 43155 mile service, as which time it should had had its Haldex coupling oil changed, it wasn't as per the service record in the service book, jump forward to present day, and in Feb this year I asked the garage at the top of my road to complete a full service being it's the first one I have given it, at 69513 they didn't recommend that I needed the Haldex oil changing as it hadn't been changed the whole of its life, nor did the dealer who I bought it off who had it serviced (without the haldex being changed) after buying I suspect off XXXXX or the Lady in the log book who lived near by.

    Am I at fault for not knowing everything there is to know about how the Audi Quattro system works no, am I at fault for not checking the service record yes.....THEREFORE IF YOU ARE BUYING A Quattro car check the service record if it hasn't had the haldex changed when it should had don't buy it or get the dealer to do it and pay for it.

    Still going to give Audi a stinking email, even thought I suspect it will go no-where.

    Mate that is awful news... Ive got a quattro and my haldex had no record of having ever been done , car is now on 71k and just had it done.. and my local VAG specialist said the oil and filter were filthy so I am guessing it might never have been done.. Guess I got very lucky.. Sorry to hear your news though :-(

    Had the Haldex oil changed on my 2009 sportback a few weeks ago at 43k miles. Service books states 38k miles about same intervals as S-tronic oil change. The later mk4 Haldex version, does not have a filter. Cost for work was about £43 all in.
    I'd have done it myself (oil costs about £20), but it's a real pain to get to, under the car's rear axle and best using a hoist so car remains level.

    I can't understand why someone would buy a Quattro and then not pay less than £100 to get the Haldex oil done once every few years... mental.

    I don't think it's always about people not spending the money, I really believe it's the Audi Centres not remembering to check the spec of the cars and carrying out the required maintenance at the times it's required...

    It's only threw this forum I even knew about the Haldex, dealer didn't mention it when they did a health check.. It's crazy that it's not told to you. I suppose you could argue that you should do your homework before buying but you would think dealers would tell you.

    So called intelligent service indicators should be doing this for us.
    In this day and age it would be real easy for car manufactures to program in the features and 'bingo' coming up to that mileage, indicate what needs serviced.

    Totally agree!! What annoys me is the stealers so called for that reason charge twice as much as an independent yet they can't follow a service schedule or advise the correct service for individual cars.. I've got a really good guy who does mine who spent 8 years at a vw dealer and got fed up with the way he was treated and how they cut corners so he set up on his own. Thank god he knows his **** as I've heard horror stories about Haldex changes gone wrong not enough oil etc

    Yeah I use local specialist who charge £60/hr incl VAT for labour and inho provide better customer service compared to local Audi outfit.

    Agree with all of above, especially the...Mental...bit, lol

    I had a Quattro before this n was the same apart from needed filter as older, had move done just now at 63k but nothing in book before

    Makes u think do stealers do this on purpose on the hope its going to then go wrong later resulting in spending more money with them!

    But gents, it's in th service manual... I agree the dealer should be more clued up and point you at things, but there's no substitute for checking yourself!

    This is where (currently) BMW are way ahead of Audi, on my E90 I was able to look through and see each service component and how long until it needed servicing, from pads, to plugs, oil, microfilters, the lot. I was surprised when I got my A3 how rudimentary the service indicator is... I basically have to take the dealers word for it that my pads need doing for example.

    so I had a call back from the Audi dealers where this car had its 40'000 miles service and was told the Haldex oil was not changed, the reason being, that many owners do not take this "Option" and therefore the oil or filter is not changed. Nothing they can do.....

    How can you add something to a design (car) that needs ongoing maintanance and not make it a mandatory service component. It has to be the most stupid thing I have ever heard.

    Also that due to the nature of the Haldex unit to fault find it by changing controllers, pumps, etc is not worth it just get a new Diff. Which has to be a like for like due to the ECU's (controller) needing to sync with the main ECU, enginer management system.

    DO not buy a secondhand Audi Quattro with out first calling the dealer or place it had its 40'000, 80'000 service without checking the oil etc, or get it done ASAP if you have any concerns. So it has full service history, just a shame the services were not completed in Full.

    I am now going to investigate the dealers claim thats its an option component of the service, and contact the lady to see if it was offered as part of the service.

    Anyone got a rear DIFF I can have?

    The haldex oil comes in like a mastik type device and push the full ammount in, it couldnt be easier, how anyone could not put the right ammount in is beyond me, more likely garages saying they have done it when in fact they prob havent

    It's not listed as optional in my service book, it couldn't be clearer that it states it needs doing every 40k...

    Apparenty they stated they will have proof the driver said no. I'll be asking for this if they can't provide it then I'll investigate misconduct.

    Blimey, if I went by the service manual for my car the cam belt wouldn't need doing for another 90k miles as its on 30k miles. It says it needs doing at 8 years or 120k miles! We all know that's wrong!

    Agree the owners should be clued up, and the likes of us on forums like this are, but the original owners of the cars from new don't give a monkeys generally as most of the cars are ran by fleet owners. Hence the dealers should take more care.

    Totally agree the dealer should be prepared to take a lead, it just surprises me that someone wouldn't get clued up enough to check what needed doing when, although as you say if it was a company car...

    I remember the cambelt says something crazy now you mention it... When i read that I was a bit "Really? Hm, don't think so!" I'd have though 60k is probably the right time to do it.

    Clued up or not, the dealer should educate the end user on the product they are being sold as part of the "service". which you buy when investing in such a company as Audi.

    I am still in talks with Audi over this matter, and am struggling for them to provide me proof the owner declined the Haldex beign changed. I am very keen to understand from anyone else who has had this problem and also the Haldex was not changed at the 40,000 mile point.

    In teresting that they know it was refused but can't actually prove it. Almost like they're just saying it... it does sound like negligence on the part of the dealer, have you discussed this with Audi UK?

    Not yet, but I have found that the Haldex oil was changed at around 20,000 miles and an invoice (see below) was not included in my Audi handbook but invoices about services etc are all the stuff you want to see. As if it was I wouldn't had bought the car, don't think anyone would had bought the car. Audi garage where it was last serviced have offered to give me a competitive quote after a vehicle inspection, I'm waiting to understand if this inspection is free or not, if it is I'll take it so I can really understand what’s wrong with it. Annoying as I bought the car at 54492 miles (date 02/07/2011)and the below invoice is from 54135 miles (30/12/2010).

    "Found Fault code relating to Steering sensor. Found possible differential fault causing nosie when turning also clutch smell eveident, further diagnoise required"

    So, bascially Haldex was servcied early but the owner shifted it on when they found out it had some potential issues.

    That invoice is interesting as ti indicates the car had a pre-existing fault when you bought it (from a dealer?), that being the case, I wonder can you claim against the SoGA, if it was within 6 months you'd be onto a winner, but if the invoice clearly indicates that fault existed when you bought it I wonder how you stand...

    I'd be going back to the person you bought it from seems they where trying to hide that 'small' issue!!! Very naughty....
