Hi all,

I have just test drove a 57 Audi A3 tfsi quattro sportback s line, and was very impressed with it but i did notice some rumbling noise while doing 70 on the dual carrageway is this normal with them or is it cause for concern

i checked all the history and the first service is Audi, but the rest are a specialized dealer, it said the haldex oil was changed at 16k then i couldn't see another check box for it being done, i asked the owner and he didn't know he just said serviced it when the light came on the dash

the car now has 82k on the clock 1 owner and is otherwise in mint condition except for kerbed alloys

The car is up for 7300k but i managed to knock him down to 6700 which i thought is a good price, i left a small deposit and collect next week

what do you guys think is it a good deal and is the noise something to worry about?

cheers

to be honest i couldn't tell where the noise was coming from my first thought was wheel bearing it sounded like that sort of noise.
i'm based in northamptonshire near kettering, i do have a registered version of vcds but the cable i have fits my old mk4 golf and they are different i think?

I've had some horrendous rumbling so had it checked over and the Haldex done turns out its the tyres all bearings and Haldex fine.. Cheap ****e runway tyres can't wait to get rid sounds like a bearing has gone

Has it got directional tyres on it?

ah right hopefully that is all it is then, because i put a small deposit on it and collect next week

Is 83k many miles for one of these? i have heard these engines are pretty good
the engine bay did look a bit neglected on it, the owner was an old guy and it was his wifes car

N8 will be able to tell you more.. I've had a few minor issues with mine nothing major but just made sure I had all the niggles done that affect these cars.. Updated dv, cam follower, Haldex oil and filter all those done for say under 200 with a specialist to be safe and you should be motoring well for some time.. Also make sure it's had the recall for the coil packs done ring Audi to find out with your vin number

Once that's all done nice remap to give it some extra ommmfffff that's next on my list

ok great thanks for the help!
BTW what is Updated dv?
i am pleased with the way the car looks only bad points seem to be kerbed alloy wheels
it's red with red and black leather
the guy had advertised it as A3 TFSI S line special edition
but when i got there it was a quattro they guy said he didn't know and just drives it!!!
what's the special edition bit?

Diverter valve, the old versions split causing boost leak and loss of power so worth getting it checked.. Maybe the leather was the se bit??

wow sweet audis in the park and right on my doorstep!

Seems like a good deal. A good amount less than I got my 06 (low milage) se sline 2.0TFSI, just make sure it is all up to scratch. Get your oil pickup pipe checked for blockage ... mine broke down the day after buying because of that.

S-Line Special Edition was basically the S-Line spec with full Vienna leather as standard, although many had more options added when new. I had a 2.0T quattro S-Line Special Edition before my S3 and loved it!

£6.7k sounds cheap for what it is.

Yea as Ben says the special edition does come with full leather also sun screen built into parcel shelf and lights in the vanity mirrors (front viser)

I've never really worked out what the Special Edition comprised of but mine is one! I have no noises from mine but it's only done 30k miles.

Mine is mapped and it transforms the car!

Thought I'd just ask you guys in the 'know'.. On a 09 facelift model, does the Haldex Oil still need changing at 40k miles?

thanks for all the input here!

so i'm looking at
oil pickup pipe checked
Updated dv, cam follower, Haldex oil and filter
service
remap and wheels refurbed when the bank balance recovers

and i should be good to go for a while, the rumbling noise is still bothering me a bit i didn't really check what make of tyres were on it
they were low profile but that's all i remember
i mentioned it to the guy and he was like what rumbling but it was defiantly there?
Also i noticed that it was on long life servicing in the service book 20k schedule seems a long while till an oil change on a turbo car?

roll on friday pick up day!!

Maybe add PCV valve, they go quite often and the newer one is a better rev iirc. £50 from audi with gasket.

quick update! collected the car today and did a full service plugs, pollen, air, fuel filter, oil and filter got the cam follower to fit and cambelt kit, water pump needs doing asap all parts are genuine from TPS.
the rear tyres are pirelli p zero rosso and are right on the limit, also i've had a chance to listen to the rumbling noise it starts at 70mph i hear nothing at slower speeds
what could it be? i checked the service book and the haldex oil has not been checked off as done on the 40k service so i dont know if it has or not?
i have booked it it with audi for the haldex filter and oil 71 quid they said and the car will be valleted, not bad also they said they will do a heath check on it so i will see what this shows up?

I have had a good listen to the noise today and it seems to be getting worse, at 70+ the steering vibrates and the noise is quite violent, and sometimes seems to be coming from the front drivers side, can't be sure though? it's pi**ing me off
i tried getting up to 70-80 the putting the clutch in and the noise is exactly the same

Check for buckled wheel, play in wheel bearing and uneven tyre wear.

fyi, Haldex oil change, no filter required cost £43 all in, which included about £20 for the oil. The air con service was £60.

the tyres look ok, and no side to side movement in the wheel, both rear tyres are on the limit and there's 4-5 mm left on the fronts which makes me think the guy swapped the fronts to the back to keep it going for a while, it could well be a buckled wheel the alloys are a bit kerbed on the front

Thanks for this reply!!
i took both front wheels off today and checked the tyres properly, and one tyre was shaped like an egg some bubbling on the inside tyre wall, not seen nothing like it. 4 new tyres on now and it drives perfect, pheew was thinking rear diff, haldex!!

will see what audi says on thurs for the health check

A mate with a Golf and a rear noise was told it was a wheel bearing and turned out to be tyres. I had a similar noise, hoped it was tyres and it turned out to be a wheel bearing. I would have described mine as a low pitched whine.

changed the cam follower tonight, old one looks ok no damage at all

the car came back from audi yesterdaythey only changed the haldex oil so i suspect i have no filter on it? does anyone know what year doesnt have filters on?

audi did a full health check and they advised rear brakes at 90% worn and fronts 60% worn, noother faults found
only cam belt needs doing so i asked why it says 115k in the service book, the service manager tried to give me some bull**** about audi germany doing theres at 115k and here in the uk audi recom8mend 75k or 5 years. all very interesting, anyway the valleted the car and bought it back no chane im paying 440for a cam belt and 250 for rear brakes,

checked the car over when i got home from work they left it on my drive, and i found a dent in the drivers side door the wasnt there beforeso i phoned the service manager and he sent a guy out to photograph it, same guy who collected it and dropped it off cheeky barstards
the service manager then called and said he would have to get a decicion from the branch manager on tues next week so will see

Sorry to hear this but this is just one reason I never let Audi valet my car ever! Also whilst it's in the workshop I am watching through the window and they know it too!

Genuine cam belt kit and water pump fitted now and rear brakes done, not much left to do now
maybe wheel refurb and remap is next on the list.
Audi have agreed that they dented the door and are going to pay for it!!
