Question How to remove gearstick trim?

    Hi,

I want to change my aluminium trim on my A3, seems to of got corroded / veined somehow from the previous owner. I will get a new one from Audi, but I can't work out how to remove it.

    Done some searching, found these:

    1. How do you remove trim from gear stick?
    2. Fourtitude.com - DIY: Shift Knob Switch (Pics)

Only, I can't work out how to change just the trim? I don't want to change the gear stick.. any ideas?

I have managed to get the trim up, but ending up like this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...i/SV300078.jpg

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

There is a metal butterfly style clip which clamps the cover on to the gear knob and stick. Cut it off!

Thanks, I presume you mean this clip? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../Audi/ring.jpg and http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...i/SV300079.jpg ?

If so, can I just use a cable tie to replace it with? Does a new trim come with a new clip? Only want new trim, not knob too.

Yep thats the one. Im not sure if a cable tie would suffice as the metal ring clamps the blue plastic on to the gear stick. You may be able to get a part number off the ring. Alternatively you can get them in any decent motor factors/DIY store (the rings are used for clamping hoses on)

Nope, not jubilee clips. I think they would foul the cover.

Im talking about this style clip...

You just nip the two "sticky outty" bits with side cutters to tighten. Let me know if you have any bother sourcing one and il post one over to you!

    Ok awesome. Thanks!

I presume it's ok to remove it before I get the clip? Ie I just shouldn't pull it up else it will fall off? Or does the clip prevent it from falling down too?

Prevents it from twisting in your hand too. I replaced mine with a cable tie and its fine. Just pulled it up nice and tight.

+1 for the cable tie. I've been using one without issues for a few years.

I took it off & got it ready for a new one. I cable tied it, think they were weak ties or not tight enough.. anyway I decided to use a jubilee clip, works perfectly & really tight!

Got to source a new trim / boot now.
