Broken spring!

Hi peeps, I went on a beer run lastnight & on my way home i could hear that awful clonking noise from the front suspension. When i got home i had a quick look & found that the front o/s spring was broken. I'm going to phone my local vag specialist tomorrow to book the car in. My question is should i just replace the broken spring or should i also change the n/s spring? I was also wondering should i be changing the shock absorbers along with the springs? I will be extremely thankful for any info. Cheers.

For pretty much ever, its always been 'recommended' to replace shocks and or springs in pairs.
Not once have i ever had a customer want to change them in pairs unless both were leaking etc.

I also wouldnt change them in pairs on my own car.

The shock should be fine, its probably only lost the last coil, so whilst noisey, its not like there is no spring left. Obviously if its leaking, it will need changing. But if its just happened, no reason it should damage it. Cars drive for months with broken springs before they get picked up on service / mot, and only have a spring changed.

So if the shocks are not damaged i'm basicly looking at 2 springs?

Id replace the broken one myself.
I wouldnt change the other just because one broke. The spring will still be in place, just with a broken coil. The other one wont be ruined over this. If it hasnt cracked yet, no reason to think its faulty.

They may try and convince you to change both, but as i said, never have i changed both on customers car just for the sake of it. Ive worked at main dealer 10 years or so.

Change both, chances are if ones snapped the other may be on its way out. I found it was cheaper to buy a full set of aftermarket springs from DPM.

The handling and ride are now so much better!

Yeah i probably will change both springs. Would be a pain in the **** having to book it in again a few months later to get the other side done. Another question i have is did your steering feel very light for a week or two while the springs were bedding in?

Hmm not really if i'm honest it was just a bit harsh for the first 100 or so miles. But now it's just amazing to drive! I've been chucking it round corners like mad and its properly smooth when you want it to be iswell.

I went for the 30mm apex springs. A) Because they are the closest I could get to a stock sport set up B) because it was cheaper to buy a set of them then two sport springs.

Got the car booked in for wedensday morning, was hoping to get it in today or tomorrow but the garage is snowed under with work at the moment. First come first serve as they say lol. On the plus side i'm going to get them to have a look at my parking sensors while it's with them, ****** things seem to work one day then dont work the next day. Anyway i'll give an update on wedensday to let you peeps know how i get on.

Could you clearly see a broken spring when looking through your arch?

I only ask so i can check mine, i get a clonking noise when going over small bumps at low speed

That could be your rear stone chip guard or something like that. Mine makes the same noise. If your springs are broken, the car should sit lower and the ride and handling will be horrible.

Yeah i can actually see the spring is broken as it has dropped below the strut on the shock absorber.

Job done! The vag specialist that i've used a few times now changed both springs (genuine audi springs), which i think is common sense really, no much point just changing one and not the other. I'm booked in again on monday for my parking sensors. They did a scan & found one sensor was knackered but they cant get the paint to colour code it with my car until monday. So i'm really happy that my springs are sorted & my parking sensors will be sorted in a few days. I highly recommend this garage for anyone in the scottish highlands (Kennys autos Vw & Audi specialists) which is located in Seafield road, Inverness.

i have my spring and shocks from my s3 its a 59 plate they come off at bout 17000 miles this year (car is low millage) i put coilovers on mine im going to skip them next weekend anyone that wants to pick them up can have them in in scotland tho
