Wrong Fuel!

Yesterday I did something for the 1st time!

What an idiot - £30/20L of Unleaded in the Audi 1.9 Diesel :keule:

Dunno what i was thinking but after 20yrs of driving I made the fools error!
Anyway drove the car 100yrs to the car park opposite, got the missus to come out with 4 empty cans, hose and tools.
Lifted the rear seat, got to the access for the fuel tank and managed to syphon almost 4 full cans out of the tank.
Drove 100yds back to the pump and refilled the tank from pretty much empty (60L) with £85/57L worth of Diesel.

Car seems ok, fingers crossed there will be no lasting damage done.

Abusive comments will be taken on the chin :blush:
 
10 out of 10 for quick reaction but you lose that for being a prat in the first place !!! lol

Hope you've got a petrol lawnmower 'cos you've now got enough for about five years of cutting !! :icon_thumright:
 
I am still kinda kicking myself for starting it really, but needed to get it off the forecourt to empty the tank and back again to fill it back up!
It was less than 100yds and pretty much at tickover rpm.

I was gonna offer the unleaded to a mate but figured that is probably contaminated with the small amount of diesel that was in the tank to begin with.

I think it's a mistake that someone will only ever make once in their lives. :tocktock:

Its easily done....apparently...by the amount of cars we get at work (Toyota) that have doen this.

I cant speak specifically for Audi, as not had it, but generally, you can get away with it. Driving it till it dies it a lot worse than what you did.
But even then, generally drain, refill, new filter is diesel, and away you go. Often hard to start and smokes but soon settles.

Diesel is very oily, which lubricates the pump etc. Petrol is a solvent, which removes all the lube, which can damage pumps etc.

Dont let it go to waste! Will be good for someone, they will just have to add it to neat fuel too. Poor a little in a glass to see colour, smell, and then did your finger in it, see how quick it evaporates. Petrol evaporates quickly, diesel doesnt. So good indicaton of how contaminated it is.
I keep what i drain, generally its diesel into petrol. I run it diluted with straight diesel. Yeah im tight ! If its petrol, ill trade it with a guy at work.
 
Easily done.......did something very similar on a Jaguar fighter aircraft when I was a youngster in the RAF. I accidently put 6 litres of oil in the Engine........not just normal engine oil......................hydraulic oil. OOOPS

And I had to flush/fill/drain/flush the whole system about half a dozen times. At least it didnt go flying then I would of been right in the Poo!! with a smokin hole in the ground.

At least you actually noticed the mistake!! many friends of mine have driven miles without noticing, until the car starts spluttering and dies!!

Whoops sorry guys im new to this forum stuff as can be seen by my join date and lack of posts.

I didnt even realise i had disliked anything untill a friend brought it to my attention :-(

Is there anyway to rectify this? if so how do i do it?

I hope I never make this mistake - I try to stop, have a look at the car and the pumps and actively think "this car is a diesel, this is a diesel pump" every single time. Better to waste a minute than pay for repairs and new fuel.

Diesel is heavier than petrol, so for the most part you'll have taken contaminated diesel into the engine - not good for it long term, but she'll live. Diesel in a petrol is worse for immediate damage - although both are pretty problematic in the long run.
 
LOL ive done this too, but luckily it was in the works van!!! had ring the boss and tell him i just put £55 quid of petrol in!! DOH!!!
 
Worst car ive had to drain was a Prius, some bright spark filled it with diesel, and drove it till it died.

Not the best idea, with the hybrid system, a right pita to get it going again. They are extra sensitive.
 
I made the mistake once and put unleaded in a diesel, thankfully it was a courtesy car while mine was being serviced so had only put a bit in so topped it back up with diesel. garage probably wondered why it was returned with half a tank though!

Did this today, first time filling up diesel. In my head = "this car is a diesel, I have a diesel pump in my hand" look back at the car, look at the pump, diesel, diesel, triple check for good luck, start filling haha :icon_thumright:
 
Don't worry, the drop you'll have used going to the car park will have been less than what was in the lines, pump and filter (neat derv).:icon_thumright:
 
I pulled in at the McDonalds drive through and put 25ltrs of Tropicana in the S3 !! it was only when i got thirsty, stopped at the local BP and bought a bottle of petrol i realised what i had done :)
 
id reccommend you change your fuel filter immediately, you should be okay after this

Do you think changing the fuel filter is needed?
The missus would have done 2 days of driving to work in it on 98% diesel by now.

If its a good idea then I'll get a new one straight away.
 
There's only one thing worse than putting unleaded in your diesel car, and that's putting salt in your cup of tea. There's no lasting damage but it tastes like sh*t.

I've done a couple of these now its usually std practice depends on how much fuel you had prior to the fill up and being honest the relative price is small its a quick job too

The unleaded did taste like ****, but not salty luckily!

There was only about 20miles left in the tank when the unleaded was added.
Might pick up a filter just to be safe. Where are they situated on the car, it it on the pump under the seat?

The fact you're using a Noddymobile probably means you'll get away with it, though.
 
Just for reference for the few that may search on the s3 the fuel filter is located drivers side on the underside of the car forward from the haldex its just pipes off change pipes on
 
I did it once to my mate's old escort - diesel into petrol.
Car started coughing and died going uphill.
Had to remove what was in the tank an fill up to the brim with unleaded and then let it run for a good few hours on tickover.

Ideally you shouldn't of started it and pushed it off the forecourt, but you should be OK. Petrol in a diesel is the worst combo - as mentioned above the petrol can damage the injector seals.

Agree you should change your fuel filter.
 
Well that would have been a job worth doing even if I hadn't put the wrong fuel in!

The old fillter came out black!

I am a little shocked that these kinda things are not changed at every service, the car is a 06 plate and has 40k on the clock.
It has always been serviced by the main dealers.

I suppose if you don't ask, you don't get!
