170 TDI cambelt price!!!

Rang the other local dealer (who I thought had closed down) & they quoted me £529. £429 for the cambelt service & £100 for the water pump. Hell of a difference from £835 or even £609 which was their 'special' price!

There was a time last year when cambelt change was a fixed price job for around £325 incl vat.
Not sure what additional charge for water pump would be.

That seems a bit more reasonable... are you definitely not going down the Indy route?

Think I might have to, seeing as how they're saying that price doesn't include the tensioners!!! WTF does a cambelt 'kit' consist of then? One belt?!! Absolute p*ss takers!

Might have to see how much the parts cost & get a specialist to do it, ideally I wanted it done by a dealer so if anything went wrong I could kick some *ss via Audi UK seeing as how it has a full Audi service history so far.

How can the price not include the tensioners? It's part of doing the job isn't it? It's a bit like saying "That's £429 for the cambelt change sir, excluding the cambelt".

When I was ringing round for quotes from VAG specialists, I tried getting seperate quotes just for fitting. i.e if I brought the parts myself.
Nowhere wanted to know, if the cambelt goes 6 months down the line and you have supplied the parts you cant then turn round and say they F'd up. They could easilly blame your parts.

I really cant believe that quote, first I laughed then got a little mad. They must think so little of us.

I'd have thougha decent specialist would offer a proper guarantee? I know when I had my BMW, Emtech in Salisbury offered a 2 year guarantee on all parts... I had my brakes done and they started squealing after a few weeks, took it back and they swapped all the pads all round without any problems.

Presumably a good Audi Indy offers the same level of service?

Or as the missus put it... it's like buying a 2 piece suit without the trousers! :jump:

Think I'll probably book it into another dealers, I wont have the courtesy car (got a brand spanking new A4 Quattro at the moment) but I'm fed up of this garage thinking they can rob me blind! I'm already getting complaint letter ready for Audi UK, but thats for several reasons including this.

They should give you a guarantee on parts most places, but they cant give you a guarantee on parts if they didn't supply them.
What im saying is if you buy a cambelt off ebay to save some money, take it in to them and ask them to fit it they wont guarantee anything. Doubt they will even fit it.

There is no way im paying 500 bucks of my hard earned cash to have my cambelt changed, it is ridiculous, a freaking license to print money. Il be going to my local audi specialist who has been in the game for many years, instead of getting an audi "technician" to fit it.

I managed to find the exact cambelt kit & water pump for my car, all genuine OEM Items for £200 (heavily discounted), which based on the final price I was quoted leaves £330 for the labour. Taking into account the work involved & the back up from Audi UK (not the dealer) should anything go wrong, I dont think it's too bad in the long run.

I used a place called midland vw for mine 190 supply n fitted n water pump

Disc n pads change ur self hours job

Absolutely, I assumed you'd go to an Indy and they would supply the parts and fit. Coming from a BMW, many BMW Indy's bought OEM parts and fitted them, I assume there are good Audi Indy's that do similar?

Dealers are overated because they're the dealer you'll naturally give in to them because you think youll get the best job and many worry about warranty, Theres many people out there who will do the job the the same standard/or better. Find a trusted audi technician and stop paying silly prices, I left dealership and started on my own for this very reason....

In response the Audi doing a cambelt change and the engine dropping off O/S engine mount, In my opinion will be due to technician doing job incorrectly tightening(or not) associated bolts. Seen this happen before as suprisingly the torque rating is required higher than expected(Seen them just nip tight with 1/2" ratchet) (mount to block) or secondly also seen chassis to engine mount bolts wound in with airgun crossthreaded.

Well, I think my decision to have to the cambelt changed at the dealers has just paid off as I've just had a £4k parts + £1k labour bill for a new cylinder head & ancilliries covered by Audi UK :D

Dealer did cambelt in the GTi. Driving home it threw up an engine fault.
Returned to dealer, who said it was a cam sensor fault where "someone had 'glued' it back"..lol
Having done all my own servicing I can say it wasn't me. I suspect it was the tech...
No problem sir we'll take care of it at no cost to you.. Ah right as if your doing me a favour when you ***** messed it up and did not own up, let alone fix it before giving the car back to me.

Hi max69vk - i've just had a call from w. london audi for my 170tdi - in for a injector recall - and they want to chance cam belt, front discs & pads, brake fluid etc...do you mind me asking - did you get yours done at a main dealer in the end? they quoted £549 just for cam belt - which was apparently a discounted price! website however still has £429!

If anyone can recommend an indy audi specialists in the w. london area - i would be keen to see how their prices compare with audi uk.

Email them the link that Ads posted: Affordable servicing < Servicing with Audi < Owners area < Audi UK & let them know that AUDI UK customer service has confirmed that your car meets all the requirements for this price, it's also worth ringing around a couple of other dealers & getting them to email quote you (try Audi Walton & Audi Guildford they were very helpful) & forwardign the quotes too, even if there not that local it still proves it can be done for the lower price through the dealer network. If they still wont play ball let them know you'll be going back to AUDI UK to raise a complaint.

thanks - all sorted now - price negotiated down. Quite surprised that they can be haggled down - I wonder how many people don't bother and pay the full price!

A year or so ago AUDI used to do oil services for £99 which I think is a fair price to retain FASH/stamps etc. You can do it yourself with OE parts for £35 so the dealer prices isn't that bad, but they just upped it to £149 which is too much for me to considered when the parts are cheap to buy (and even cheaper for them too).

I think considering the complexity of the job around £400 isn't too bad for the cambelt but over £500 makes you think it's too much.

Right I am fortunate to have a good friend in the trade and i have just purchased for my 2007 CR170 1 x Cambelt kit 1 x waterpump 1 x fuel filter 1 x pollen filter 1 x oil filter 5l of Quantum 3 oh don't forget the sump plug!!. Right Grand Total £214. Parts from TPS! + discount. So Imagine how much VAG pay for these parts! So £429 + £100 for pump. Hmmm, I appreciate to some money is easy to come by. I also appreciate if you only keep your car for a few years it's worth the stamp. What i fail to understand is what people with a car that is now 5yrs old think they will gain at re-sale for having a full vag stamp? Get an competant indy to put the reciept showing genuine parts were used in your folder, stamp your book and save £300! All of the above at Audi HQ would be getting on £850!!!!! Trust me I have wasted £1000's at HQ and you gain nothing! oh maybe have a nice day when you have paid! My tuppence worth!

Very true, however my car is coming up to 5 yrs now & I went to Audi purely for the aftersales backup rather than just getting a cheap price, the parts may come with some kind of guarantee but how easy would it be to get your engine rebuilt/replaced if something went t*ts up due to the garage messing up?

I've just been looking around york for a good price, been offered cambelt + water pump plus full major service for £645 with free air con service too, thats from an indy. Audi it came to nearly £900 without the air con service so i'm thinking indy it is for me, i dont think there price is un reasonable at all. Booked in for the injector recall with audi though so no doubt they will try an up sale on me or find a problem they would love to sort lol
