I have just taken delivery of a 2.0 TDi A3 Sportback Black Edition and noticed that when the light switch is in the DRL position and I indicate left or right, the DRL's dim and then turn bright once I have finished using the indicators.

However when the lights are in the "Sidelight" or "Main Beam" position when I indicate the LED DRL's don't dim at all.

Apparently this is normal according to my Audi dealer in the UK, however I think it's a bit bizarre, does everyone else have the same scenario and also is there anyway of modifying so that they don't dim at all when signalling?

At a guess, I would say this is done so that the turn indicators become more visible under certain light conditions. If I am right, then this is a safety issue which Audi has included on your new model.

It's a matter of coding if you don't won't it to do that.

yup perfectly normal, with DRL's only on they dim, but on full lights/sides they don't....unlesss you change it but
Dont mess with it or your'll get the Anti DRL police onto you  ........:p

Surely you mean the road safety police?

When you lights are set to Sidelight or main beam the LEDs are dimmed anyway so they don't need to dim anymore.

I personally think it shows attention to detail that the DRLs dim when indicating.

Yeah I know what you mean, but think they would be better just staying a set brightness when indicating!

Who and how is easy/cost to change?

takes a few mins with vcds

Not sure I'll be investing in vcds, to change a light config, are there any 3rd party companies offering vcds services?

nee naa nee naa nee naa...

Audi seem to be the only make with dimming DRL's when the turn signal is active - stand out from the wonnabee's and leave em be, they dim for a reason not asthetics.

And when someone waiting in a side road on the right that you're going to turn into doesn't see your flasher and pulls out to follow you?

Leave them as Audi intended, ***!

The range rover evoque also dims when signalling. There DRLs look amazing!!

Was chatting today with an Audi specialist about a few things and he said they are configured in that way only for certain markets. Apparently UK being one of them due to new legislation, probably Audi are just complying with some more Brussels cr*p!!

so your saying one must turn their dipped beams off when turning, so the indicators are viable?:superman:

You can see indicators with main beams....

DRLs on BMWs definitely stop you being able to see the indicators, whereas with Audis and the Evoque it's a lot easier to see.

New on here, and with a Audi A3 that I've just bought (yesterday). I had noticed that the DRL's dim on another vehicle and thought it was a great idea. Makes the indicators so much easier to see.

I like the Evoque DRL's haven't seen one signal yet - I often used to say turn signals were optional extras that arrogant drivers of prestige cars never chose as they never indicate LOL

As for BMW DRL's I hate the white LED angel eyes - just too intense. But strangely for me I prefer the more incandesent looking angel eyes.

How about the new Audi DRL's - lush.

I have now ...sweet. How about a lens applied to ours to show the Batman symbol, sorry got carried away, perhaps the 4 rings will do.

Shame the clip didn't quite show their numberplate LED's.
