In last month or so, this sound has crept up.

Only on accelaration.

I have tried to record with my phone and i think it can be heard quite clearly. In the last 20 second, i parked and accelerated in neutral.

Any ideas?

I can only hear a slight moan on the over-run, as you lift off. Not sure what it could be though, would usually associate whining with the gear-box (but not if you're in neutral). What engine is it (might help someone a little more knowledgable)?

Sounds like turbo whine to me. What engine and how many miles ? If it's BKD with about 70 - 80k on the clock then almost certainly sticking vanes in the turbo !

The engine is a 2.0 TDI, 140bhp.
I have about 61k on the clock

It does sound a bit like a siren.
It is an automatic, and everytime I accelerate I can hear it, usually from 1st to 3rd gear.

If I drive and put my foot of the pedal, I can hear it go from high pitch to low.

If I put it in Park mode, same . Goes into high pitch , when I release the accelerator, goes low.

Like something spinning. It reminds me of those whistle kids get. Obviously not as high in pitch.

i had a similar noise on mine, took it to 4 garages, they drove the car around, some said it was the aircon pump, some said it was the turbo, one of them was a vag specialist and said he thinks the previous owner knocked the cat out... and then finally i took it to a local garage and it ended up being a driveshaft bearing which i got for 50 quid from audi and paid 30 quid fitting and now the noise has gone and it seems to drive better.

If it's wining from stationary just with reving and follows teh engine noise from idle (can hear it properly now) it's more than likely something in the belt system, alternator, aircon, power steering pump (if not electric)
Have you tried putting some load through the electric system (lights, anything heated or can draw large current) and see if the note changes? the same with aircon off and on this may help identify where it''s coming from.

Failing that is may just be belt noise and may change with a tension or slacken.

Turbo

Like what mike foster said.

i also have this, and ive had 3 new turbos in mine ( due to faulty installs ) it still makes this noise. ive learned to live with it now. pretty frustrating trying to throw money at curing the problem to no avail.

Right now I have the same noise like the one in the video and is coming from the turbo.
Last summer I went for a bigger turbo, VNT20. A week ago it broke down. Apparently something broke loose from the engine and was thrown into the exhaust and bent the hot side blades. It made that siren noise but VERY loud.
Saturday I went to the guy who sold me the turbo and after he took it off I was able to see the mess inside. He installed a new one and after driving 4-5 km the new one also began making that siren noise, this time not as loud as the first one.
I can hear it while accelerating when in neutral and when driving up until the 3rd gear. After that the whining noise is covered by others.

I'll go again to have the turbo off and see what has happened. If the exhaust blades are again broken, I'll have to get the cylinder head checked. We suspect that it is failing. I may need a new one.
I'll keep you posted.

On the other hand, the car pulls way better that it did with the first VNT20 and also when I floor it I don't get the black cloud of smoke behind.

iv got the same whining noise, i tired listning to it from the engine bay and it sound like its coming from the turbo, i had this check by audi and they said its coming from my speakers :lmfao:and last week POP goes the turbo!

So what is the conclusion on this then? Have tried reading loads of posts in all different threads to figure this out. I am getting EXACTLY the same noise as in this video so massive thanks to Nuno_Rules for posting in the first place - thought I was going mad.

Mine seems to make this noise when revving at very low revs 1000-1200rpm then less so after that - way before you would be expecting any kind of whistle from the turbo. It makes the noise in synchrony with the engine revving (i.e. when you take your foot off the accelerator it stops then back on it starts again) however the noise carries on slightly after the revs have died down to idle.

Only just bought the car so will be gutted if new turbo needed since gathered it's a thousand pound job right? 2005 55 plate 2.0tdi 140. Got a bluefin but will take it off if it's gonna put pressure on a turbo that is already on its way out.

Any help very much appreciated - pleas etell me it's NOT the turbo!!

I'm not sure about everyone else but I get this kind of noise when the engine rpm is decelerating between about 1.5k rpm and idle. Sounds a bit like a bus engine if that makes sense.
I don't have it while accelerating though.

Its always made that noise since I bought the car with 40k and has now done 80k without the turbo going pop (yet). It's a bkd, completely stock, mainly town driving

It's the 2.0 tdi 140 bhp engine, non common rail (pd - pumpe duse injection system). Bkd is the engine code. Can normally be found in the service manual or on the sticker in the spare wheel well

Ahhh, thought it was the pumpe duse but never heard it called a bkd before thanks.

Yeh I totally get the bus engine reference and it is indeed when decelerating 1500-1000rpm. Fingers crossed it isn't a warning sign for something going pop

So lads, anybody get to the bottom of this?

Recently noticed the same noise coming from my motor. A3 8P 140bhp, 2005 and just done my 59,000th mile.

Sounds to me as though the turbo is whining, again, up to around 3rd gear at fairly low revs.

if anybody could shine a light that would be great. it doesn't bother me, but i'd like to know what it is and if anything needs replacing, for peace of mind.

Cheers :)

Mine too thought I was being chased by the fuzz!! It's an 05 2.0 TDI SLine quattro with 80k FSH new cam belt at 40k. Only at low revs tho, I put it up to 3000 revs for 25 secs or so whist driving without it going into limp mode. It still wanted to go some. Garage says the vanes need cleaning. Do I trust them? It doesn't seem to have 'motorway mileage' would urban driving affect this?

thanks guys!

HI guys I'm new to this thread.... I've got a 2008 audi a4 2.0 tdi manual.... three weeks ago are oil pressure light come on as my partner was driving off the drive she went about 100 yards and drove back to the house and told me of this light, so i got the car picked up and taken to a local independent garage they new of this common hexi drive failure where the part on the engine side rounds off, so it was going to need the new upgrade kit, so i thought thats fine we need the car get it repaired, being the car is only done 63,000 miles with full service history with audi up to 2012, and the rest by an audi specialist before i got this car, it had only done 57,900 miles 14 months ago, so its not doing a lot of miles, but when the garage said we can repair it we said ok then they said you might swell fit a clutch as its low, so being i like my car to be good, but when we got the car back on this saturday morning, the garage said the new parts need to be bed in as the car has now developed a whining sound and I'm not happy with this sound but the garage area fobbing me off..... is this sound the turbo?? as it makes this sound in or out of gear, and when i go slow its not noisy, but when we go along and but more revs to go faster the whirring sound gets loud... and if I'm going alone g fast and dip the clutch it stops until i get revs back up to speed. so not happy with audi. can it b e the turbo for sure ?? because the garage need to sort this problem out. its not fair on us if it was not making this sound before thanks for reading my story..... please to give me your feedback. many thanks.
