I have just been reading the Audi Annual Report 2011 and during 2011 Audi produced a total of 189,068 A3s. But what surprises me is that 27,461 were the 3-door model, 149,855 were Sportbacks and 11,752 were Cabriolets. That's five times more Sportbacks than 3-doors. Possibly because customers knew there was to be a new 3-door in early 2012 where as the new Sportback will not be released until 2013.

Also the Audi plant at Gyor in Hungary produced 1.883,757 engines. 920,773 were supplied to Audi, 798,267 to other Volkswageb Group companies and 118,919 to third parties.

Thats a shed load of SB's tbh, imagine seeing 2 million engines sitting there lol, I'd be curious to know what the ratio of manual to dsg there were.

My friend who is a Approved car sales controller at Leeds Audi said when I bought mine that the SB's are now Audi's most popular car and a lot of A4 drivers are choosing these.

Must say there isn't a day goes by when i'm out that I don't see a 8P SB on the road.

yup, i pass about 6 or 7 SB's guaranteed each day on my 3 mile drive to work - mostly all the same people. and maybe the odd 3 door every now and then.

Thing is, they're not much bigger than 3dr tbh inside as we have both, only conveneince is the doors.

Not quite bourn out by Audi's production figures...

A4 = 330,222
Q5 = 191,957
A6 = 244,924

The A1 is quite popular as well with 17,566 built in 2011.

Hey Nige, i thought the boot was a bit bigger as well isn't it? isn't it like 50 litres bigger? or have i really misread something?

The A3 3-door has a luggage compartment that is 1000 x 796mm with a capacity of 350 litres with the seats up and 1080 with them down. The overall length of the 3-door is 4238mm

The Sportback has a luggage compartment that is 1000 x 831mm with a capacity of 370 litres with the seats up and 1100 with them down. The overall length of the Sportback is 4292mm.

So the Sportback is 54mm longer, has 20 litres more luggage space with the seats both up and down. Not a lot really.
