    Remove "economy tips" from DIS

As title says - any way to switch 'em off ??

When the car is all iced up, it's not really much of a "tip" to tell me to "avoid warming up engine whilst stationary", or if I want some fresh air, to tell me "air resistance, close windows" - lol

I'm guessing it can be done via VCDS???

    Cheers

You can disable the gear change suggestions in DIS - whether this will remove the aformentioned I doubt it.

Just don't look at the display.... I know I know you just can't help it, much like a moth to your headlight

I've tried that and it didn't make any difference - to be honest, I don't mind the gear change suggestion - the thing that's irritating is that if you ignore the gear change suggestion you get another econimy tip saying "use suggested gear" - aaarrrgghhhh!!!

Whatever you do, don't knock the car out of gear and coast to a halt as there's another "friendly message" saying "avoid disengaing clutch at above 1300 rpm" - lol

Does anyone else get these messages, or is my car unique !!!!!

I think that it depends on which screen you have displayed on the DIS which determines whether you get the economy tips or not. If you are on trip 1 or trip 2 (the ones with the bigger writing) then you don't get the economy tips. However, if you are on the 3rd screen which has the slightly smaller writing and can show you both instant and average economy, then you also get the economy tips, and as far as I can tell, you can't turn them off - except by selecting one of the other DIS views.

Going to check this on the way to work this morning - a colleague was similarly annoyed with the economy tips messages in his A5, and I think this was the solution we came to.

I'll try this on the way to work also.

I always drive on the screen that gives trip distance, mpg and travel time.

well, it seems PJR is correct - selecting any of the other screens in the DIS removes the "economy tips".

Shame I can't have the screen that shows journey time, trip miles and avg fuel economy for the trip WITHOUT these darn messages - lol

New game - I'm going to try and see if I can confuse it and get it to display all of the messages at once !!!

    Thanks for the the replies

I havent yet seen this on any models i have worked on but i would have thought that this can be changed within the DIS?
if anyone who has this can gain access to VCDS check under the convieniece module to see if there are any settings there to disable it?

I love this sort of game. I try to get my fuel economy as high, then as low as possible. Hold it/the average speed constant. Try to drive without using the foot brake (not by using the handbrake instead, but by engine braking and leaving a lot of space to coast to a halt before applying the handbrake - tricky down steep hills, and involves planning routes to avoid them), and getting home without turning right, among other things, but I've never tried this one. Genius.

I went through a similar phase with the little warning symbols on the DIS - got to the point where I had the "washer fluid", "refuel", "blown bulb", "esp off" and "speed limit exceeded" symbols all fighting to distract me the most.

Of course, you could just try and not do any of the things which triggers an economy tip message....

By the way, does anyone know the full list of possible economy messages - I think the only ones I've seen are 'pay attention to the recommended gear', 'don't rev the engine while stationary' & 'don't press the clutch while the revs are over 1300rpm' - Presumably the recommended gear message will never appear if you untick the 'show recommended gear' in the DIS.

Also, I don't think the cabrio has all the same messages - I've never been warned about having the windows down, and it would be daft if it told me to put the roof up to save diesel!

I've also seen "air resistance, close the windows" as well as the ones you mention.

I'm going to try freewheeling down a hill with the windows open and see if I can confuse it - lol

If that's the case, I'm glad mines a lease car 'cos I've killed it - lol

the "avoid warming engine when stationary" message infers that you're NOT supposed to let it warm up before setting off?? What makes me laugh with it is when the screen was covered in ice and I'm waiting for the de-icer to work, the car tells me that I shouldn't warm it up sat on my drive !! Heated front screen is the one thing I miss from my Focus !!

You could check the adaptations channels for the cluster to see if it can be disabled as clusters are generic with same engines as such, like tdi, s3, etc, also so are ce modules & pretty much every part, just a case of enabling/disabling, also as mentioned have a look in 09 as this has features like recup braking & start/start systems which are relevant to the economy systems as such that I've had to disable for others.

For best practice/a nice long turbo life you should let the turbo get up to temperature before ragging it. You should also let it cool down a little at the end of a journey where you've been liberal with the schnell pedal.

That's more to do with the turbo, though - i.e. avoiding a lot of throttle when you can until the car is warm. You can still drive without flooring it.

Just found this thread while Googling. Those economy tips do my fruit in, I especially like the "Pay attention to the gear change indicator" whern it's prompting you to change from 4th to 5th at 40 mph going up a hill!

I've given up on this!!! You are right Gov - it prompts you to change gear when it would be completely inappropriate to do so - best way to get rid of the gear change "tip" is to floor it and it goes away !!

Other folks are quiet correct that the "helpful" hints are only displayed in the "economy menu" of the DIS. I just try and see how many I can get it to display in one journey !!!

The latest one I've seen (when we had a short spell of sunny weather) is "close window whilst air conditioner is on" - not seen that one before!!!

The manual is a bit ambiguous about them too, check page 24/25 "Economy tips are displayed if fuel consumption increases in certain situations"

It does say that if you touch either of the selector button on the right stalk while a "tip" is displayed then it will immediately disappear.

It does also say "once you have cleared an economy tip from the display it will not appear again until the next time you switch on the ignition" I don't know if that means that specific tip, or the tips in general

There really should be a way to disable them.

I disabled the suggested gear in the DIS but the economy tips still tell me to pay attention to the suggested gear

I was wondering if I would get the "economy tips" from DIS if I changed my cluster to this 2012 version ? Does anybody know ?
