    Taking out Warranty.

Hi all, just a few questions regarding warranties. Ive had a warranty for my car since i got it, 2 years ago, and so far (touch wood) haven't needed to use it. Its up for renewal and its about £250 and that covers the turbo and the first £1000 of any repair. The car is a 54 reg 2.0TDI and has 75000 on the clock, the turbo does seam to make a bit of a whistling noise but performs fine. What are peoples thoughts on taking out these warranties? and do you have any recommendations?
Also, what are they like for geting work done when something goes wrong? can you use a garage of your choice, or do you have to go where they say?

Warranty Direct have paid out plenty of times for me.

13 months worth of cover is £320.

There is a 3 month period where you can't claim for 'wear and tear' items, once this expires you can claim for flywheels, bearings etc etc.

Warranty Direct paid out for my turbo. There are conditions depending on age and mileage but I have renewed for £485 for 24 months.

You can use any VAT registered garage you want or one of their network garages (not to be recommended with Audis ) and you can get a cheaper premium if you stipulate a maximum labour charge of £60/hour which is their network rate. They paid my claim in 5 days.

You must have stamped proof of servicing (vat registered garage) at manufacturers intervals and current MOT certificate which they need copies of for claim purposes. Cambelt change and other age and/or mileage related additional work must have been carried out in accordance with schedule.

Very worthwhile in my opinion for peace of mind and hassle free motoring !

When it comes to claiming, how do they decide if it needs doing or not? Do they check the car, or would the garage saying that something needs replacing be enough for them to pay out?

I rang them and said I thought the turbo was going and, as part of the conditions requiring the owner to mitigate any further damage as much as possible, I suggested I get it looked at. They agreed and my local specialist did various tests and said it was knackered.

I then got my garage to phone WD and agree what should be done and the price for doing it. They did the work and I paid the full invoice figure and sent all the details off and they sent a cheque back in 5 days for the amount they were responsible for i.e. the agreed repair amount less items not covered (oil, oil pipe, etc ) and the £50 excess. Because of the mileage I also paid 20% towards the cost of the parts.

All in all the bill was about £750 (I think) and they sent a cheque for £550 ish.
