Thread: Sh*t .... think the tangerine is broken

Right guys, need some advice in what could have gone wrong. Driving home tonight, came of the round about and gave unleashed all the work "zie German" had done and going up the revs I noticed the car jerking forward and saw the engine management light flashing, came of the gas peddle and light went of but the car still jumps forward when putting the foot down.


Hope thi isn't bad. Car is still under warranty..... No mods to engine or ecu just springs and spacers. Car is cruised and not thrashed.


All advice and input is welcome.

I have heard about spark plugs going quite often on S3's!

why i asked about how its running now... i was thinking plugs, or more likely the coil packs

Car is running smooth, just jerking when I go up the revs, like the power cuts and comes back. The car is just a year old.

Pretty sure thats spark plugs!

deffo either coil packs or plugs, if its when your going up the rev range sounds more like coil packs from what I've experienced with mine, get audi assist out in the morning and they will sort it. nothing too serious by the sounds of it

Can sparks go that quickly one a car... As said was driving nicely and when i came of the roundabout, opened her up, she start jerking, like the diff was kicking in to stop the car from skidding but noticed the engine-management light flickering, then went off again...

Will give a healthy call to Audi tomorrow.. having springs wont void the warranty on this issue will it??

really count its sparks, they gradually degrade, normally on mapped cars, whereas coil packs are just so unreliable on these cars its not true (i always keep a spare in my car just in case!) and these can go just like that

The car was audi owned before and i bought it from Redline specialist cars.. The car still has warranty...

if thats the case you won't have audi assist... you'll have to either drive it there or get it towed there, depends how bad the misfire is and how car away your local dealer is

Its drivable. Hope it wont cause damage to the engine?

if possible try not to drive it, driving with a bad misfire isn't the best thing possible as in theory it could damage a piston (absolute worst case)

Wouldn't be coil surely you would have the engine management light up constantly and loss of power altogether and the car would shake. I'd go for sparks plugs too.

With all the misfiring plugs I've run I've never had engine management light, but doesn't mean it couldn't happen. I would get a misfire at cold start, then revving over 5000rpm would cause the car to run inconsistently. There is no warning, one dayit just starts happening. Short journeys seem to make it worse.

This sounds very similar to my little hiccup a while ago. When under load, after about 4-5k rpm, the car starts stuttering and the EML starts to flicker. This went on for a couple of days and then it sorted itself out. I took it into Audi and they said that it logged a misfire and that they didn't know what caused it and for me to keep an eye on it to see if it happens again. Touch wood, not happened since. Mine happened at about 2k miles. I'll be interested to see how yours turns out. Hope it gets sorted quick!

You don't seem to be very lucky with your cars, Ilim. After all the problems you had with your VXR Arctic, I hoped things would be better for you with your S3. I'm sure it won't be anything major, hope you get it fixed soon, Matey. xx

True that, i had enought problems with the vxr, but with the audi i thought i was safe, i treat it like a baby.. no harsh take offs, letting her warm up before driving, washed everyday, oil checked once a week. But still stuff happens.


Spoke to Audi this morning and informed that if the EML light has gone of it wont be serious, cars going in to audi tomorrow to get one of the alloys replaced (paint coming off) and will leave the car with them.. Hope its all good...

i think spark plugs..these engines really like to kill them. especially if it's cold.

Quick update, just drove the car to uni and car seems to be normal, no EML light etc... Still getting it checked tomorrow from audi.... Think it might have been a misfire......

Id say coil packs i had this in my old audi twice if your with the rac ring them up and they will replace it for you only charge you for the part mine cost me about £35 free labour

How'd you get on Ilim? Hopefully they diagnosed and sorted it quickly and cheaply enough bud.

Thought with our agreement the deal was done. I was obviously wrong.

Car got checked out from Audi and the spark plugs where the problem. Replaced under warranty.....


Car is better now.
