Backdraft Motorsport S3 Endurance Race Car build

Hello all, and welcome to our build thread for our S3 endurance race car. In 2005 we built our Mk1 TT race car to demonstrate our products and services for the various 1.8T models. In more recent years the 2.0TFSi platform cars have been a very popular car to tune and upgrade so we felt now was the right time for us to move with the times and show what we can do with the new S3.

We already have a 2.0TFSi Seat Leon racing in Guatemala which has been a great success and we have gained valuable information. So why endurance racing? We believe it's the ultimate arena to demonstrate durability and reliability. Both areas that really give a tuning customer confidence in the products and services.

The donor car is a mint late 2007 Audi S3 265 bhp and completely standard. A few nice extras which should all go into the pot to sell on and go towards the budget. In fairness the S3 is pretty tame in standard form. It's a 'nice' car but a bit heavy and safe with its Quattro system and airbags etc. A good diet will be the first port of call and then installing a full weld in cage. Watch this space for further progress and enjoy the ride with us...

Donor car. Before she gets stripped.

Interior removed. (The original seats and door cards are now in an A3 1.9 diesel)

Slowly looking less and less like a car!

Strapped to the truck as it's sent off to have it's FIA approved roll cage designed and fitted

    No going back now!

Hmmmm, going to watch this with intrigue to see how you work your way around some of the S3's known weaknesses. Really useful thread, keep it coming!

Bit I'm really interested in is many of us with modded road cars suffer quite a lot of issues with plug wear/deterioiration (Audi quote 60k from a set, most of us don't get anywhere near that). Given yours is an endurance car fascinated to see how you work with this . When you get to gapping plugs / setting up the car I'll be absolutely hooked!

    Good luck!

Thanks everyone for all the interest. It should be a cool build. We have some great parts lined up to go on the car. We hope to have some pictures of the cage installed at some point next week.

Parts that are surplus to requirments and available: Sat nav system, blue tooth module, CD changer, steering wheel, wheels, suspension, front brakes, (rear brakes maybe. Not sure if we will retain the std ones for now). Side and rear windows, interior carpets, etc etc

Just had some photo's sent through of the roll cage so I thought I would share them with you...
Looks really good. Lots of bracing! The cage should be really strong and add some rigidity to the chassis.

The cage isn't 100% complete yet, but its not far off. Looking forward to getting it back so we can get the cage painted and start rebuilding the car.

We got the car back yesterday afternoon and the cage is now fully fabricated and installed. It's a real bit of craftsmanship and nicely done. Some more pictures for you...

Cage braced to the A pillar for added strength and safety.

Original seal mounting points have been removed to make space. We will be making seat bars to locate some side mounted bucket seats nice and low in the car.

Cage is braced through to the suspension struts.

Alex now has the time consuming job of removing all the sound deadening. With a bit of elbow grease (tar and glue remover and a heat gun) it comes off. It's important to get the car stripped and prepared to the best possible standard so that when it gets painted we get a good finish.

This is what an S3 looks like in individual pieces!

Yes I think we will stay with white on the inside and in the engine bay. It makes the car easier to work on as it's brighter. You dont want to be working on a dingy car where you cant see things easily. Not sure what we will do with the outside of the car yet. We plan to do a few different designs and post them up on here as a poll so you guys can give us your thoughts, but at the moment we are a little way off that!

    nice job

i have a couple of questions

i wonder how much weigh these sound deadening things and the front dash. did you weigh them?

are you planning any reinforcement on the front struts?

finally, are you planning to put on any carbon kevlar parts like hood, trunk, bumpers, spliters, diffusers etc.. if yes i will be interested to buy..

cant wait to see the updates

    nice job

i have a couple of questions

i wonder how much weigh these sound deadening things and the front dash. did you weigh them?

are you planning any reinforcement on the front struts?

finally, are you planning to put on any carbon kevlar parts like hood, trunk, bumpers, spliters, diffusers etc.. if yes i will be interested to buy..

cant wait to see the updates
We havent weighed anything yet. We know the car weighs 1455kg in std trim, and we will do a final weigh in once it's all together. The cage is braced to the front struts and that should create some strength but we might look into a strut brace. It all depends how the car performs on track.

We should be getting some nice new parts in soon (suspension, ARB's, brakes etc etc) so I will stick up some photos when we have them in. I will try and do some weight comparissions where I can.

Not sure what we are doing with the bonnet yet, but we plan to do a complete flat floor, splitter and diffuser. I imagine we will also make some dive plains and a decent rear wing, but all in good time ;-)
