The new heads up display system sound bl00dy awesome !!! Want !!!!!!

There are many Audi display and control technologies that make driving more relaxed and under control. One of them is the head-up display, which lets drivers keep their eyes on the road. All key information from the areas of navigation, traffic signs, car and assistance systems appear to hover about 2.3 meters (7.55 feet) in front of the driver, in his or her direct field of vision.

The next generation of this technology will take a significant step forward. A type of display known as the contact-analogue head-up display positions symbols right in the real environment. As an Audi approaches an intersection with the navigation system activated, the driver sees a transparent route arrow outside of the vehicle, positioned precisely at the real intersection. As the intersection nears, the arrow becomes larger. At a distance of 10 meters (32.81 feet), it appears to be about the same size as a real physical arrow on the pavement.

That is not all that contact-analogue head-up displays will be able to do. In hilly terrain, the navigation arrow can show the direction the road will take after the hilltop. If the driver is driving with adaptive cruise control activated, the distance to the vehicle ahead is displayed conspicuously. If the night vision system is active, and a pedestrian steps out onto the street, the display precisely shows the direction the pedestrian is coming from and his or her distance from the car. In the contact-analogue head-up display, the projection window – which is referred to as the ‘eyebox’ – is located somewhat higher on the windshield than today and is about as large as an iPad. Audi’s work on head-up displays is driving progress in all technology fields. In the future, it will be possible to show information only to the driver, the front seat passenger or all occupants of the vehicle.

The solution that Audi is presenting at the CES takes up this idea. The driver and front passenger each have their own head-up display available to them; the driver’s is contact-analogue, while the passenger has a conventional head-up display. Both displays show digital travel guides, news and pictures from video telephone calls. In the interest of safety, the driver is shown only static images and simple animations. If the passenger uses a wiping motion to pull the applications into his or her line of vision, all video functions become available.

Visible to all occupants is a central third projection, whose image appears to lie on the windshield. The driver or front passenger can move contents they are currently viewing to this central field with an easy, quick movement so that they can view it together. A camera detects the movements and directs the appropriate signals to the system.

well pretty sure all models will have the option of adding most of them

I would think that, with the exception of the electronically controlled hand-brake, almost ever thing else will be an optional extra in the same was as it is at the moment. I certainly hope so because I would not want to the paying for most of it.

You will probably only get the start button if you go for the "Keyless go" system used on the more up market models.

Should at least have the screen as all new A1s come with the pop up screen. I can see alot of the gadgets being mega bucks though Audi wont give them for free!!

I hope it grows on me cos at the moment I think that looks bloody awful! Sounds like there's some nice gadgets if you want to pay for them. But one of my favourite things in my a3 is how nice the interior is compared to my old focus, I hope they don't ruin it in the new one.

Hmm I'm not so sure. The front looks nice but the back looks like a bigger A1 and I'm not a fan of the A1's backside (or the A7's come to that - Audi are messing up their derrieres lately)

I've read on Engadget it won't appear until 2013 ...I wonder weather this would mean the Audi a3 won't coming out until then. I hope so....

Although there'll be a raft of changes underneath, design seems more evolution than any radical revolution. I'll reserve judgement until it's officially released. It's obviously mirroring elements from other models and there is an overall resemblance to a larger version of the A1. Some would that's a good thing, others a bad. I'm on the fence right now.

As for the interior, I think they done a great job. Less on the dash, more in the centre piece and the MMI looks tidy. Cup holders back in the right place? Discuss.

Now, just need to wait and see what the RS3 saloon looks like.

It won't appear in the US until 2013 as they're only getting the saloon and sportback variants, apparently the 3door is expected in Europe first, although whether they'll have many to sell at launch this year, or whether they'll slowly appear as the factory orders go through is a different question.

I think most of the car looks like the current car, with an A1-esque front end (too effeminate for the car IMO). I wouldn't say no to it if it looked as good in the flesh as the current one, but the shape doesn't do anything for me. Other than residuals, I don't really care.

As for the interior, the new toys look great but they're gonna be costly for stuff I've never missed. I'd like the new MMI, but as mentioned, the dashboard doesn't look great - the vents are odd, there's too much solid space (looks like one of those red and yellow toy cars) and the climate control panel looks like the heater controls from a Mk1 Escort. Actually, if you ignore the screen popping up out of the top, the whole dash looks like a Mk1 escort. I like the centre console where the gearstick etc is, but the top of the dash doesn't live up to it.

Evolution not revolution, but why change a winning formula? The lights aren't my cup of tea, but overall I like it. Just a shame the sportback isn't out sooner, I'm not waiting another 12 months+ for my car.

Looks good. I'm pleased that the A3 overall won't be much more than an evolution (from a selfish point of view), but I'm sure that Audi have been also careful not to rock the boat on a model that is a very big commercial success for them. Downsizing continues from the larger car classes and private punters continue to want "accessible premium" products like the A3 and Golf, so it makes sense not to mess.

I've been keeping an eye on the new A3 for a long time and don't think the S3 will be a 2.5 5-cyl. By all accounts, it'll have a 280PS upgraded version of the current S3 lump. Remember that C02 and economy considerations bring at least some people to S3s (including me).

The Sportback is planned for release in 2013 and I read that the S3 will come fairly early in the model cycle (later in 2013 I'd bet). I also think that prices will be about 10% up in real terms, as the current A3 pricing structure is close to the Golf Mk6 - e.g. a Golf R costs more than an S3 when spec'd similarly. The 8P3 is your last chance to have a sub £35k S3 IMO!! (RS3 was testing market for a £40k S3 ).

It's all about when we see it in the flesh, then you can make plenty of judgement, I thought the F458 was horrible when I saw it in pictures, until I started detailing one, its just the most beautiful car I've ever seen

It looks good, but as already said, some parts of it look very retro.

But why oh why have the retained those useless side bars on the centre console!!!?

Does look good I must say, will probably be a £2-3k option though, but then you expect to have to pay a few grand on German cars for a decent spec.

The A3 itself looks decent but I'm concerned about the rear and have yet to see a decent pic of it.

Hmmmmm, love the look, but intrigued to see how they think the mapping will be supported with the current available network infrastructure and data tariffs. Very much the move forward the RNSE needed!
