Unhappy 2.0 TFSI hard start problems... and exhaust pop

Especially on a cold morning or first thing in the morning...

Turn the key... takes up to 10 seconds to start.

Did a lot of reading around, one post somewhere suggested turning the key to position before ignition and waiting 5 seconds for fuel pump to prime. After 10 seconds of listening to clicks it starts beautifully like it should.

My question is... could this be a fuel pump relay issue??

Second issue... exhaust pops/blows under acceleration around 30-40mph... it will blow out like it is blocked or something and make a low pop noise... is this normal? Not heard it before... usually does this when started up... makes a loud note or two then settles down to a steady hum.

Many many many thanks for your help!

You shouldnt need to prime the pump so it sounds like you are draining fuel/pressure over night. sounds also as if that fuel is collecting in the exhaust and "popping" in there on start up. Pressure leak somewhere. VCDS ??

The fuel pump primes when you open the drivers door....

Mine starts on the button every time regardless of the weather or temp so there is a fault to be found somewhere. Have you had the coil packs changed by Audi FOC? What year and mileage is the car?

It is a 2007, 56k miles. Never had the coil packs changed.
I have maintained it over and beyond the book. Never had a long life service, serviced it every 8-10k miles.

Recently done: New spark plugs, oil filter, gear box filter, dsg oil, air filter, fuel filter, engine oil, coolant, brake discs and pads, diverter valve, all boost hoses and all vacuum hoses. Have not found any leaks as such but it may be one that is hard to catch. VAG COM'd and found no codes.

Did replace the battery as well... but with a 60Ah battery... the battery is slightly smaller than the battery tray... (think it is 8L) but have ordered a new battery that will fit and is 72Ah... initial thought was more cranking amps... hmmm... will keep looking.

Any specific areas for checking fuel pressure drop?? Would it be worth replacing the fuel pump at this mileage? Are coil packs a must at this mileage too?

    Thanks

The coil packs are a recall from Audi as they fail. There was a batch problem. My car is 2007 with 26k miles on it. Fuel pumps don't go with that mileage normally.

The battery needs to be the same spec as the car had when new or better I would say. That is probably where your problem lies...

I see... where can I get the coil packs from? There are so many sites and I want to get the correct ones...

Would the GSF ones be okay? How many do I need?

Is it worth changing HT leads while I am at it??

Back on the fuel pump priming issue... I can open the door and sit in the car for up to a minute before the clicks stop.

Cheers again, its a fantastic car... just want to keep it on the road and running sweet.

You go to an Audi centre for the coil packs. They will fit them too.

Everything checks out... two mechanical opinions and one trip to Audi main dealer... no can identify the cause of the hard start... all I know is that if I turn the key to ignition power (position ii) and leave it for a few seconds then start it... it starts properly...

Don't recall if I mentioned the mystery rasp noise that happens under acceleration at 30-40mph in this thread (not able to scroll upward in this browser) but it seems to be less with new brake discs but it is still there and now slightly louder... it makes no sense.. the wheel bearings/hub checked out... so again no ideas from the two mechanics/Audi... this sucks but hey it drives so will keep on driving it rather than racking my brain.. thanks for all of your replies.

Just an update for anyone who encounters this problem. The mystery rasp noise decreased. After changing the n/s wheel bearing. Everything else was intact on inspection i.e. CV Boot, Suspension arms etc.
